        Community

Bookmans is not only a reflection of our community, but a contributor to it. We are dedicated to supporting those individuals and organizations that work to improve the quality of life in our own backyard.

        Literacy Volunteers of Tucson
Empowering Lives Through Literacy! Literacy Volunteers of Tucson believes that everyone should have the opportunity to learn to read. They exist to improve the reading, writing and English-speaking skills of adults who read at or below the sixth-grade level, free of charge. They bring together dedicated adult learners with committed and well-trained volunteers who provide instruction to address the individual needs and goals of students in a confidential manner.

Bookmans has donated more than $10,000 to LVT and is proud to be the organization's principle corporate sponsor. This past December, we underwrote the Third Annual Fund-raising Breakfast, which raised over $62,000 in gifts and pledges and will allow 110 adult learners the opportunity to receive tutoring over the next three yeas.

In addition, we are now selling limited edition Literacy Volunteers of Tucson t-shirts in our three Tucson stores. All profits from the sale of the t-shirts will be donated to LVT.

        Reading Seed
The Reading Seed program was born in 1995 and merged with the Rotary Club of Tucson in 2004 to expand its staff of volunteers. Their goal is to help all children in Pima County in the first, second, and third grades read at or above grade level. Bookmans is a financial contributor to the organization and we provide Bookmans gift certificates each year as prizes during their "Reading Seed Board Game" literacy drive.

        Sun Sounds of Arizona
Sun Sounds of Arizona provides audio access to information for those in the Southwest who cannot read print due to disability. The service can be accessed in three ways: on the radio, on the web, and on the phone. Each year, Bookmans donates money and merchandise that allows Sun Sounds to share the gift of reading with all people, regardless of disability.

The Humane Society of Southern Arizona
The Humane Society of Southern Arizona is a non-profit organization dedicated to the sheltering, placement, and general welfare of animals, the prevention of cruelty to animals, animal overpopulation, education concerning humane treatment of animals, and involvement in other animal welfare issues. Bookmans is proud to be a long time supporter of The Humane Society. We are a sponsor of "Puttin' on the Dog", a celebrity fashion show fundraiser, and we donate merchandise for the Books and More Entertainment Sale. Both events raise thousands of dollars each year for HSSA. Additionally, we participate in the Coupons of Compassion program, which benefits the Education and Cruelty Prevention Department.

        Guitars in the Classroom
Guitars in the Classroom has been inspiring and training classroom teachers to integrate singing and playing guitar into children's daily school experience since 1998. The program empowers educators to transform schools into musical environments in which childhood creativity is nurtured and embraces. They do this by providing free instruction, access to instruments, resource materials, and program supervision. GITC develops and sustains low-cost regional programs for children, educators, and communities from coast to coast.

Bookmans pays for GITC instruction at both our Grant and Speedway stores.

Educational Enrichment Foundation's Shoe Shopping Day
The Education Enrichment Foundation provides resources to expand and enrich student learning in the Tucson Unified School District. Bookmans donates $2,500 annually to allow EEF the resources to provide shoes for more than 125 children whose family incomes fall at or below the poverty line. The kids are allowed to pick out their own shoes, and Bookmans always donates books for them to take home and enjoy. In 2007, Bookmans was elected to the EEF Hall of Fame Philanthropy Honor Roll for our continued support of Shoe Shopping Day.
