What do Japan, cleverly disguised sexual innuendos, and a giant sea monster have in common? The Midnite Movie Mamacita, that’s what!
On Friday, Aug 31, I attended the Grindhouse Redux screening of “The Terror of Godzilla." I know this movie was not supposed to be a comedy, but I found my jaw sore and eyes dry from all the tears of laughter over the genuine cheesiness of this film. For the entirety of the movie there was a constant chortling from the audience.
During the opening scene, we see the original Godzilla that we all love to fear battling with a tin can version of himself. This new Godzilla-like creature is an alien-made, mechanical dinosaur, appropriately dubbed “MechaGodzilla.” With the help of a bitter, mistreated, and misunderstood scientist, this tin dino can destroy the city of Tokyo, allowing the alien race to rebuild it to their standards.
Between the random flashbacks of the scientist’s daughter aiding in the creation of Titanasaurus and the uncomfortable sexual tension between the protagonist and the token “hot” girl/scientist’s daughter, this movie is best categorized as a romantic-comedy-meets-action flick. The climax is contained within the last fifteen minutes of the film. Titanasaurus (under the spell of alien mind control) and MechaGodzilla go on a violent rampage through the city of Tokyo, tearing down buildings, breathing fire into the streets, tails whipping over high-rise apartment structures. Godzilla engages in battle with them to heroically defend the city he once attempted to destroy but now calls home. He succeeds in destroying his enemies by ripping off the head of the mechanical beast MechaGodzilla and giving Titanasaurus the ass-kicking off a lifetime. When the brutal beating is over, he gracefully brushes the dirt off his shoulde - seriously, Godzilla had to “get that dirt off his shoulda.” Godzilla is one pimp-gangsta-monster.
Thumbs up to the Midnite Movie Mamacita! This movie was the perfect date-night flick.
