        EVENTS: Japanesian Barbie Live

        BY: JENNY G

Oh gosh, I have to go move my couch and approximately 10 zillion boxes of books...but before I do, let me quickly mention this band that I had the pleasure of seeing at Bookmans tonight!

I should probably disclose that I am, in fact, the person who booked Japanesian Barbie to play at our store. I'd heard great things about them - they won the Arizona Daily Star Battle of the bands last year, before any of them graduated high school! Now two of their members are attending Pima Community College, one is a junior at Mountain View, and one is an 8th grader at Tortalita.

They're a really fun, eclectic band that mixes fairly untraditional keyboards, drums and guitar with violin and refreshingly unpretentious vocals. Their songs are indie-rockish, upbeat, and often hilarious.

Seeing any band play at a bookstore is an interesting experience - some seem to thrive amid the eclectic, fast-paced environment, and some (although wonderful when performing at clubs) fizzle and drive customers away in droves. I'm happy to report that Japanesian Barbie was a great example of the former - customers of all ages and persuasions enjoyed their show, and stayed despite technical difficulties. I hope to have them back soon!

To hear some of their songs and learn more about them, check out their myspace page: www.myspace.com/japanesianbarbie
