        EVENTS: Passport to Insanity!

        BY: MIDNITE MOVIE MAMACITA

Got the summertime blues? Pack your bags, grab a boarding pass and put your mind on auto-pilot as cinema social director Midnite Movie Mamacita guides you through Grindhouse Redux: A Midsummer Night's Nightmare! Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer don't get much more fevered than this!

Grindhouse Redux is presented by Bookmans Entertainment Exchange.

First destination: The Gate II: Trespassers (1992), an in-name-only quasi non-sequel to the similarly-titled 1987 horror hit. Featuring only one older (but no wiser) member of the original cast, this outing focuses on a bunch of teen sad sacks who use black magic, computer wizardry and heavy metal to summon a demon from Hell to do their bidding. Sort of like a satanic I Dream of Jeannie...if Barbara Eden had been Beelzebub.

Next stop, The Ransom (aka The Town that Cried Terror, 1977), with an all-star cast of Hollywood burn-outs (Stuart Whitman, Oliver Reed, Deborah Raffin, Jim Mitchum) as residents of the ironically named Paradise, Arizona... a town terrorized by a cross-bow wielding homicidal maniac...who just happens to be a Native American! This politically incorrect abomination was filmed in the Valley (mostly Scottsdale and Mesa) back in the dark ages before the PC police changed the name of Squaw Peak. (And how!) Heap big hysteria!

Now kindly return your seatbacks and tray tables to their upright and locked position.

Friday, July 11: The Gate II at 9 p.m., The Ransom at 11 p.m.

        Saturday, July 12: The Gate II at 5 p.m. & 9 p.m., The Ransom at 7 p.m. & 11 p.m.

Admission is $6. The Chandler Cinemas are located at 2140 N. Arizona Boulevard, Chandler (behind Target), 480-821-1605. For more informatio, visit the official Midnite Movie Mamacita website.
