On May 9, 2007, Bookmans Entertainment Exchange will award Schumaker Elementary School $5,000 for winning the Bookmans' Reading Challenge, which kicked off in February. Over the course of three months, Bookmans challenged students in 25 Tucson Unified School District elementary schools to read as many books as they could. When the challenge ended on May 1st, students had read more than 100,000 books!
Schumaker Elementary School won the Challenge by having the highest average number of books read per student. Schumaker's 331 students read almost 13,000 books. Bob Schlesinger, owner of Bookmans Entertainment Exchange, will present the $5,000 check to the principal of Schumaker at an awards ceremony at the school on May 9th at 12:45 p.m.
Schools who participated in the Reading Challenge were: Anna Henry, Blenman, Booth-Ficket Magnet, C. E.
