Books Get Sexy at Bookmans

Posted in Bookie Blog, Merchandise on 04 May by Dani Byers

Bookmans East has rearranged some of our non-fiction sections to make finding the books you are hunting for easier. Some of those sections include topics that are fundamental to the human experience. No, we aren’t talking about taxes. We aren’t even talking about cooking or home maintenance, at least not cooking in the traditional sense. We are talking about sexuality, relationships, marriage and divorce – the BIG 4. It’s something we all have in common, unless you are a monk, but even then you got here somehow. So yeah, sex is a thing.

Being Green and Orange

Posted in Bookie Blog, In Our Stores, Merchandise on 28 Apr by Dani Byers

April is Earth month for Bookmans, because one of our core values as a company is the environment. It makes sense to take care of that which is most important to all of us – Mother Earth. Reuse, Reduce, Recycle has been our mission for 40 years, way before the term global warming was an unfortunate part of our modern lexicon. While we are glad that humanity is beginning to wake up, we have a long way to go. Like Kermit said, “it ain’t easy being green” or orange. The best changes are those that are incorporated into our daily lives, small changes that can have lasting and large cumulative effects. All through the month of April our Bookmans locations host environmental fairs and recycling events to help you stay informed, but we rock Mother Earth all year long and we want you to join us. We’re here to help you find the best ways to support our environment and protect this precious planet, so let’s get started!

Art 4 All; Art History Unpacked | Bookmans

Posted in Bookie Blog, In Our Stores, Merchandise on 27 Mar by Dani Byers

Not everyone can be an art historian, critic or theorist, even if you actually studied art history. The Fine Arts field is a highly dynamic and ever changing arena. There is always something new to explore, always something new to learn. Art history is much broader than the Renaissance where even the most learned scholars who have devoted their entire lives and careers to it’s study are daunted. From there is can be argued that art is essential, innate to the human experience. The creation and appreciation of art can be traced back to man’s earliest history. There is a fundamental quality about artistic endeavors. Humans are compelled to pursue creativity. Art, of course, is a somewhat over-broad term that encompasses the entirety of all human creations. We could include non homosapiens in our discussion, as in painting elephants. We will, however, stick to people and people creating fine art.

Posted in Bookie Blog, In Our Stores on 14 Mar by Dani Byers

PSA: Bookmans East has a Young Adult Book Club.

Have you ever read a book and desperately wanted to talk about it? Some novels, especially the best ones, leave us with a multitude of questions and ideas bouncing around our minds. We believe that the purpose of art and literature is to “hold a lens up to reality” (as aptly stated in Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy) as well as educating, expanding or challenging our own ideas – even ones we aren’t aware of.

We’re calling all young adults! Bookmans East has a Young Adult Book Club and you are invited to join! The club originally began as a teen club but the excellence of the genre coupled with the attention Hollywood has given these titles inspired us to open membership to all young adults. Books such as Hunger Games, Maze Runner and Perk of Being a Wallflower and more have been adapted for the screen which bringing wider attention to young adult fiction.

Clever and Creative; Genius Re-purposing | All Things Art at Bookmans

Posted in Merchandise on 06 Mar by Dani Byers

Ever looked at something and thought “That is so clever – it’s so simple!” or “That is so cute, what could I use it for?” At Bookmans we have those thoughts daily, it is actually part of our job. Bookmans is a treasure trove of interesting items that you just can’t resist, so we want to help you find a use for these amazing finds and get organized while doing it, plus, its March which means it’s All Things Art and we think that making cool things from other cool things absolutely counts.

We know that everyone can benefit from organization but being tidy doesn’t have to come at the expense of style. You can organize your world and still have it look incredible. We also strongly believe in the transformative power of recycling and re-puposing, using existing items to spare our planet the burden of more stuff. That idea suits our creative tendencies as well – why use something boring (or worse, ugly) when you can get the same result from an interesting beautiful object?

Critters: A Keeper’s Guide to Pets | Bookmans

Posted in Bookie Blog, In Our Stores, Merchandise on 25 Jan by Dani Byers

Got Pets? Bookmans is passionate about animal welfare so we have sections specified for all types of animals and pets. We do separate the sections between animals and pets not just for ease of shopping, but for practical reasons. Not all animals should be pets, how many folks have a pet grizzly bear or a killer whale in their backyard? Luckily it isn’t necessary to own or live with animals to respect and admire them. That is why Bookmans has such a large selection on different types of animals and pets. If you are considering pet adoption, we encourage to do your research first and we have all of the guides and manuals to assist you in choosing and caring for your pets. We also have a section for animal stories, (Tails? haha), that will give you a first hand look at the relationship between animals and humans. Many of these titles are humorous, heartwarming and educational. Let’s take a look at some titles that caught our eye.

The Moon is Wrong: Astronomy 101 | Bookmans

Posted in Bookie Blog, Merchandise on 10 Jan by Dani Byers

If you are anything like a typical Bookmans employee you stand out in your yard at 3am and wonder what is wrong with the moon. This behavior could also be linked to growing up in Tucson. Little desert kids spend lots of time looking up, or laying on the ground staring at the night sky, possibly because there is so much to look at. Arizona has long been a hub on astronomical research with the University of Arizona’s Flandrau Planetarium and Kitt Peak. In lieu of deeper psychological exploration which might expose our potentially embarrassing fascination with standing in our yards late at night we will just say it’s typical for Tucsonans. We do things like this.

Folks from Michigan go fishing, we stand around getting a kink in our necks. We therefore notice things, things that aren’t right – like the moon. Just before the new year, around Dec. 18th, some of you might have also been standing in your yard noticing that the moon was wrong. Totally wrong. It was getting smaller like usual but it was disappearing from the top down. Initially it looked like cloud cover was simply obscuring the top quarter of the Moon but NOPE. It kept doing this strange thing night after night. It actually was waning (your first technical term; it means getting smaller, yeah I had to look it up to be sure) from a horizontal position. Wrong. No, no, the moon is supposed to get smaller – or larger – from left to right or right to left, depending upon the phase and where you are on the planet. We will try to cover all of this but it gets messy. Read More…

Fisher, Michaels, Cohen: Legendary Losses | Bookmans

Posted in Bookie Blog, In Our Stores, Merchandise on 03 Jan by Dani Byers

What a year. So many of our beloved luminaries, entertainers, and writers have passed. It’s mind boggling and leaves us feeling almost numb, but not numb enough. There are simply too many fantastic creative intelligent people who have passed in 2016 to cover here. We do want to begin though by giving a special nod to Gwen Ifill of PBS and broadcasting fame as well as writers Harper Lee and Richard Adams who wrote the famous To Kill a Mockingbird and Watership Down respectively. All three gave us so much and they leave behind a legacy of intelligence and excellence in their fields.

Now we will turn to those three we have decided to remember here in slightly more depth, although the task impossible. It would take infinite volumes to cover not only their works but their lives, which were equally interesting and unique. Read More…

Crime Pays: Books Sure to Put You in Stiches | Bookmans Entertainment

Posted in Bookie Blog on 14 Dec by Dani Byers

The world has seen a lot of silly criminals, and crime isn’t funny, except when it is. Law enforcement has been known to lament the utter lack of common sense in some of those trying to make a buck or heist. Get ready to face palm as we cover a few True Crime titles that tell the stories of criminals gone wrong.

We’ll start with America’s Dumbest Criminals by Butler, Ray and Gregory. The subtitle of this one is equally telling “victims of their own crimes” and we wish all crime could be so self referential. America’s Dumbest tells some truly entertaining stories like the lady who ruined her $5,000 winning lottery ticket by altering it to match a $20.00 ticket. One convenience store robber made off with one hot dog only to choke on it in the store’s parking lot, proving once again, everything we need to know we learned in kindergarten. He must have flunked sandbox. A check forger mistakenly signed the stolen check with his own signature then proceeded to give the teller his real i.d. complete with his current address.
