Artists were in the spotlight at Bookmans Speedway. Tucson's best local artists came by to shocase their work at an event co-hosted by Adam Yeater. Yeater's artwork is a regular fixture in our store and his One Day comics are often found by our community board as are his personally created, independently printed free comics. They go fast! Yeater recently expanded into figurine production. The brightly-colored fantasy and comic beings are sure to be as popular as his comic books. Yeater's imaginative collective includes artists such as Arlene Mandros, Zombilly Rae and Sugar Skull Design among others. Take a look at the art we have on display at Bookmans Speedway.

Our previous Tumblr meetup at Bookmans Flagstaff had more RSVPs than attendees. They're not a shy group. It's just difficult to pull them away from the media they enjoy on a daily basis. Our most recent get-together was more fruitful. There was a better idea of which tags to use on posts to garner attention and a larger number of interested parties spreading the news by word-of-mouth as well. Tumblr is everywhere at NAU and throughout Flagstaff.

What significance does the date April 13 have with the Homestuck fandom? One of the greatest. It's tucked into just about every available niche within the comic itself. This year it marked the 4th year running of Homestuck as an active project of MS Paint Adventures creator Andrew Hussie, and it has been a wild run so far. The popularity of the story has grown strong and steady in the last year, with a lot of the attention coming from a simple Kickstarter held to create a related video game. When it began to break records, people began to take notice.

Whenever I feel as though I've hit a creative wall I surf over to my Pinterest account. Before I know it, I've added at least ten new projects that have nothing to do with what I started searching for. I'm okay with that though. Pinterest has become so many things for me: a way to stay connected with friends, an e-dream board, and a place to keep all of my ideas for store events.

Our Wellness Fair at Bookmans Speedway was an upbeat, happy, healthy affair, with something for everyone to enjoy! Cesar Vinueza from Slim Shop Fitness gave two demonstrations. The first was a Zumba dance/fitness class for some weight loss fun. The second was a martial arts demonstration where students learned basic skills and gave a performance to the delight of parents and customers alike. Tucson Village Farms and Plant A Seed cooked glorious greens. The samples were so good that one young boy carried his through the store declaring, "This is the best thing I've ever tasted!" The store agreed. Cortiva Institute and ASIS Massage performed free massages and their chairs were never empty. Ashlie and Kelly from ViSalus gave away health/weight-loss shakes and bars and the user testimonials were inspiring. Attendees had more in-depth Reiki Massages done with Joe Machado and had their cards read with Tarot by Tanu. For those looking inward or to the future, the curious sat with Cynthia Rae and Patricia Kirkman, Intuitive and Numerologist respectively.

We are into our second quarter of Bookmans' Music in the Classrooms Head Start Program in Flagstaff. I come to every class with a plan but usually there is some song the children are determined to sing. At this point they often tell me what songs they want to do. I like to tease them, "Quit bossing me around!" or "Who is in charge here anyway?" They get it and we have a lot of fun together. As long as they are singing and participating in the music our mission is accomplished.

Bookmans' Music in the Classrooms (MIC) is off and running again this year. We're bringing music to Head Start classrooms in Flagstaff, and I want to say that I am very grateful to be working with these children again.

In these early weeks of MIC, I try to get to know the children's names and establish a classroom environment that is welcoming and fun. I want the children to feel safe and confident so they will participate in the singing and dancing we do. I've learned after a few years of doing this that an ukulele is often a better instrument to get the ball rolling. It's a little bit quieter than my guitar. Plus, it's fun to teach the children to say ukulele. Say, "oo-koo-leh-lay" like the Hawaiians.

She painted our faces like clowns and then took the kids through clown academy, where they became certified silly clowns. Silly Tassie made the kids balloon animals because no clown is complete without a balloon animal. All Kids Club members received a free I Love Bookmans T-shirt that they got to decorate with markers and had delicious Eegees to help us cool off. It was a party to remember. Whether this is your first time playing in a tournament or you are a seasoned pro, the Devastation-run tournaments at Bookmans are for anyone to walk in and play.

Why Street Fighter X Tekken? Perhaps it is because Capcom took the better of two hugely popular franchises and created the best war in the history of fighting games.

Or that in Chinese astrology the dragon was seen as a powerful almighty king because it was made up of different parts of animals such as a tiger, fish, snake and an eagle. Saturday, Dec. 3 was busy, busy, busy at Bookmans Mesa! Not only did we have lots of faces choosing to buy local for their holiday season, we had plenty of entertainment.

The creativity started early with Holiday Altered Art. Nancy brought out her pretty paper and supplies for our lovely ladies. Lots of cutting, punching, folding, gluing and thoughtfulness filled our café as we used found supplies to create altered art book pages. Books that could not be sold but were perfectly sized provided the foundation for the creative canvas. Beautiful works of art will be displayed in everyone's home this holiday season with the miniature display stands they were surprised with.

Most loyal Bookmans customers are true geeks just like our employees. Even those of us who don't look the part have an inner geek -- like a superpower that we've been hiding since we were teased in middle school. For example I was laughed out of 6th grade English for reading my own sonnets aloud after studying Shakespeare's. Sometimes I stop listening to what someone is saying because I'm distracted by a single word and wonder about its etymology. Where did the word "twirp" come from anyway?

Sometimes it can be hard to convince the 20 or 30 somethings of our generation that there is a kind of music that is as important as hip hop, rock, pop, metal or country. Long before Hendrix, McCartney or Cash there was Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Gershwin and others who helped lay the groundwork for what creativity in music and the possibilities of playing instruments would become. We bow to the great classical music icons and proudly give them their own section in our music department. We can only hope that in this digital age their contributions and talents will not be forgotten but revived. Luckily in Phoenix there is a network of people ensuring just that ideal -– Classical Revolution Phoenix.

I’ve never considered myself a crafty person, which is ironic since I do consider myself an artist. I write and publish poetry, like to draw and paint and love to sing and dance. But when it comes to careful coloring, calligraphy, cutting a straight line, using glue guns or sewing machines and using obscure materials, I shiver in fear. Even so, the first three Mondays in October I’m going to help lead a Halloween crafting session for grown-ups in our Flagstaff cafe. Thanks goodness I’ll have the help of an ex-Girl Scout camp leader!

The books have been completed and the films have been released, but that doesn’t mean that Harry Potter fans have nothing to look forward to. Harry Potter is so beloved that we feel like he is one of our friends, that the Wesleys would invite us over during the holidays if they could and that we want to get Neville a big hug for being the unsung hero. It surprises people that such an epic franchise has its battle with censors and that the Harry Potter books are among the most frequently challenged books for young people over the past decade. With elements of magic, mischief and fear, the stories are too much for some of our youth or even some libraries. As with every book, video game, movie and piece of music, Bookmans stands firm that everyone has to right to choose for themselves and we gladly fight against censorship and those who oppose Harry Potter, which is why we once again put on our famous Hogwarts House Party.

School days, school days, dear ol' golden rule days! This week kids colored canvas pencil pouches to hold their erasers, pens, pencils and other scholarly supplies.  Flagstaff kiddos stenciled their names, favorite animals, fantasy characters or slogans on these simple pencil pouches. Some decided to freestyle it, making their own colorful graphic art to add panache to their school stuff. And we keep on getting super excited about a whole new school year with Willow Bend Environmental education next week and our fabulous Back-to-School Party the week after. Don’t miss it. Our summer kids group applied fun animal designs, stripes, polka dots, flowers, unicorns and hearts to give each a creative touch. We put in a request for them to report back about how the first flight went when we all gather again next week for the Pirate Party! It has been a spectacular summer so far with our Summer Kids Events, but last week we saw sparkling creativity with several Independence Day-related crafts! Are Superheroes more your thing? Check out how Tucson celebrated Superhero Week.

Flagstaff:

For our summer kids' event this last week, Flagstaff kids got ready for the 4th of July Parade with red, white and blue necklace beading and wooden Flag making. Everyone's patriotic decorations turned out beautifully. Come see us next week for reusable tote bag and handmade-at-Bookmans tee-shirt decorating! Check out the pictures here.

Phoenix:

It’s the week before the 4th of the July so we insisted that our kids turn recycled items into their own patriotic toys! We saved old cd’s, dvd’s, soda bottle caps and marbles to create 4th of July spinners unlike any you have ever seen! . By coloring on the cd’s, placing the marble inside of the bottle cap and gluing the bottle cap onto the cd hole, the kids has spin tops that kept them occupied and proud for quite some time. They colored swirls, flags, fireworks and squiggles on their blank cd’s and once the spinning began, their drawings blended together beautifully. We also handed out plastic American flags for everyone to proudly wave around during whatever fireworks display they were attending over the weekend. Everyone had a blast and we hope the kids have a fun and safe holiday! Check out the pictures here.

Mesa:

Bookmans Mesa kicked off Independence Day like a firecracker with our "Star Spangled Bangles". This week we tackled the art of stringing beads to make some "Red, White, and Blue" fun. Some even branched out, and made necklaces and collars for their pets. Every creation was unique and different, but every one was AWESOME! Check out the pictures here.

This week at our Summer Kids Events we celebrated Super Heros! What do you think your super hero would look like and what type of super powers would he/she have? We took pictures of kids flying through the air, colored super hero sheets and created bookmarks out of comic books! It was superific! Up Up and Away! Check out the pictures here.

Ina:

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's.... Super Hero Week at Bookmans! We had a blast designing our own super hero costumes; mine was basically just a big scribble that looks like something Lady Gaga might wear. We also made our own bookmarks using cut-up comic books. Let me tell ya, my new Dick Tracy bookmark looks so good sitting inside my copy of A Game of Thrones right now. In addition lots of kids flew by, but our lighting speed shutter camera caught glimpses of these super heroes that can be viewed on our Flickr feed. Next week, Puppet Muzik! This week we plan to create collages that represent music. This was also a great chance to make a collage card for Father's Day. Check out our photos on Flickr!

I consider myself a Star Wars child. Having been born in the '70s I had visions of Jabba the Hut and Leia's gold bikini (unfortunately?) burned into my young psyche. Even my dog looks like a Wookiee. When my daughter whines, “I tried!” I respond, “Do or do not. There is no try.” I realize that having one’s mother quote Yoda might be both annoying and embarrassing, but I can’t help myself. Now I can indulge myself at work thanks to our new and HUGE Millennium Falcon that passed across the trade counter.

Hello Bookmans World! I remember coming to Bookmans as a kid, getting a tour around the store and seeing how it all works! I loved it so much! Little did I know that one day I would be the guy giving the tours! It has to be one of my most favorite parts about working here. The kids and people are blown away at the amount of work that goes into making a store like this function. Seeing the shrinkwrap machine and the employees break room are some of the favorite highlights on the tour. At the end of each tour we all put our hands in the center together and yell PEACE AND LOVE! Sending our good vibes out into the world!

Santa's cookies are on the counter and we're ready for the hoof taps!

Yesterday I went to the store to take pictures, and ended-up helping a man assemble my new office desk. It was thrilling. Everyone just looks super happy to be back among the shelves, and, talking with folks, I've realized that what we miss most about the store are the customers! Science Fiction and music ruled the day at Bookmans Mesa last Saturday. We started off with Mos Eisley Base, the Arizona branch of the Rebel Legion, an international Star Wars costuming organization. Benefiting Relay For Life, they posed for pictures, told stories and answered costuming questions. Everyone from Princess Leia to Yoda to Imperial Troopers were here. What? Were there droids? Of course there were! They featured a fully-functional R2-D2 unit that strolled throughout the store chirping and beeping. That was truly amazing! Thank you to Mos Eisley Base for coming out, the Force was truly with us!

Every Friday our ongoing children's music program Tunes for Tots meets at Bookamsn Grant for tons of tuneful fun. Lately, we've been having so much fun I had to share it! We had a hoot Fricay, November 12 as we sang along to some of our traditional faves (Shake Your Sillies Out, Hokey Pokey, Wheels on the Bus), played finger puppet theater (Itsy Bitsy Spider, Baby Bumble Bee) and shook our shakers 'til we were all shooked out! We hope you can join us in the future for more fiddlin' fun!

At Bookmans Phoenix we love ourselves some zombie -- at least every single employee here loves a zombie something whether it’s a film, book, graphic novel or toy, all of which we probably purchased here in the store. Night of the Living Dead holds a special place in our hearts; we eagerly awaited the release of Pride Prejudice and Zombies and were antsy with anticipation for the new Walking Dead series to premiere on Halloween on the AMC network.

Lots of Tricks and plenty of Treats! October 30, Bookmans Speedway hosted our annual Family Halloween Party. Magic, candy and costumes! Patrick the Magician dazzled us with his spooky magic show! He made a bunny appear out of thin air, turned a tiny piece of gum into the longest starchiest piece of bubble gum you ever saw and made coins appear and disappear right before our eyes! All the children filled up their sacks with tons of candy and lined up for pictures and a costume contest! Thanks to all who came down and partied with us for Halloween! What a blast! The costumes were amazing! It was hard to pick winners, they were all so awesome!

Halloween and pumpkins have gone hand in hand since we can remember, which is why this October we threw our youngest customers one of the best pumpkin patch parties in town! We may not have had an actual pumpkin patch in the store, we did decorate our community to look as though we did.

P1050525

Our little trick-or-treaters came in their best costumes: Buzz Lightyear, Indiana Jones, zombies, bumble bees, cows, clows, and Iron Man to name a few. As soon as the kids stepped into our pumpkin party, we showered them with goodies like their own jack-o-lantern trick-or-treat bags that can be reused for the big day, candy and a paper plate face mask they had to create by visiting each Halloween activity featured at the party (every station gave out either an eye, mouth or nose and by the end of the party, everyone had a completed mask!).

Hokey smokes and alakazaam! We sure had a sweet time at our Halloween Hootenanny! It's days like this that have us feeling that cool, electric, Fall Festive Feeling! Mrs. Witchway whisked into Bookmans Grant weilding her mighty facepainting flourishes and had all the kids looking extra special in their crazy costumes and funny faces. She even popped out a couple of scare-rific balloon black cats! And the fun was just starting as she (and her puppet pal) spun tale after tale of specacular spookiness! Kids and adults alike were thrilled. Next we played a game of Cat's Eye (pin the eye on the cat), Spooky Pokey (the Hokey Pokey, but creepier) and gathered up our noise makers to prepare for the Groovy Ghoul Parade! Man, did we make some noise! We creepy crawled our way through the store sounding like an old Halloween record played backwards! We screeched, howled and boo'd our way to the front only to mob our Mummy host for a treat at the end! Boo! You had to be there!

For the truly brave at heart Bookmans Mesa celebrated All Things Creepy this Saturday with our annual Halloween Festival of Fright. What is the Festival of Fright you ask? Well if you didn't make it to this store-wide event, man, did you miss out! Patrons were greeted at the door by the maniacal Dr. Eggbert. Dr. Eggbert is not your typical scientist, his love of candy, love of chickens, and his high pitched cackle would appear to the average person as true madness. We were thrilled to have local poet Brian Armstrong visit Bookmans Speedway on Oct. 9 and Bookmans Grant on Oct. 23. Brian has had a pretty interesting life travelling to Europe (where he met his wife, who also did the illustrations in his new book) and, more recently, self-publishing his first book of poetry. His experiences paint his poetry and he was glad to share both with our customers. His new book Pangaea: Transforming the Landscape is an assembly of post-modern poetry, combining symbolic imagery of natural and industrial elements to reflect on the many frustrations, hopes, and expectations of contemporary life.

Hilarity ensued when the funny folks of Apollo 12 graced Bookmans Phoenix once again to freely hand out giggles and guffaws on Friday night. As part of our Fight Censorship Month, the improv troupe tackled the topic of banned materials. We snagged members, Arturo Ruiz, Mack Duncan and Rick Lansen to browse our banned books display for their favorite titles, read excerpts out of aloud, and on the spot come up with scenes to act out. They chose some familiar titles like, The Scarlet Letter, Twilight, The Great Gatsby, Snow Falling on Cedars and Junie B. Jones and the Yucky Bucky Fruitcake, all of which have been banned. They took us back to the era of the scarlet letter and satisfied our sweet tooth with a new scenario in Ronald Dahl’s, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Bookmans appreciates all artists, visual or performing, especially when they help with our anti-censorship message. We had nearly 20 folks come out just to see their performance and at the end of the show, the guys announced that their troupe will be getting their own theatre space soon at 4727 N. Central Ave. (Central and Camelback) so keep an eye on their Facebook, Twitter and MySpace pages for more info as it becomes available, I know we’ll be checking with anticipation!

Fight Censorship month here at Bookmans has always been one of our favorite months because we love digging through our boxes of books for the classics we grew up with and seeing why they were banned or censored. We are thrilled with the chance to share the gift of information with our customers in any form and show them that books they read or are reading aren’t allowed in some locations. In honor of all that has been banned, we chose one of the most beloved banned books from this past decade to celebrate with our local kids.

In 2001, J.K. Rowling put out her first children's book, The Sorcerers Stone, and within those pages a new fandom was born based around everything Harry Potter. We chose to celebrate this banned book because on a daily basis, we help our customers invite the adventures of Harry Potter into their homes and see how quickly and easily people become enamored with the magical story set within the seven books. We’re very familiar with the wizarding world and wish daily we could live there ourselves, so what better way to fight censorship and celebrate Harry and his gang than to bring Hogwarts into Bookmans?

People challenged each other to games like Mortal Kombat, Call of Duty, and Counter Strike. Others enjoyed playing solo with Zelda, Reservoir Dogs, Manhunt 2, and Grand Theft Auto (almost every single Grand Theft Auto every made has been banned at some point). The Nintendo games we started the night off with weren’t necessarily banned, but Nintendo did re-edit them to censor out certain imagery, language, and content they felt would tarnish their image such as Duck Tales, Zelda, and Wolfenstein 3-D.

In honor of the last day of animal month here at Bookmans, we welcomed local author, Pamela Venezio to share with our Bookmans kids about the plight and joys of the beautiful Mustang horses all over the country. Pamela and her husband both grew up around live horses and together share a vast love for them and informed us of the training and adoption process of a Mustang which includes: 90 days with a professional trainer and a show to follow that the Mustang displays its newly trained skills so that everyone can see what gracious and intelligent creatures they are in order to make the proper adoption decisions.

Pamela shared with us her new book, "Ripley and the Traveler,” which follows a true store about a captured Mustang horse and their journey through the training process while his new friend, Ripley the dog, helps along the way and has beautiful illustrations to follow. The book is very in unique in that it also “grows” with the child as the first part of it geared towards children under seven with shorter sentences and larger print while the other half is for children over seven with more complex lessons and writing. It’s a great two-for-one deal! Part of the proceeds of this book benefit the Mustang Heritage Foundation to help with their great cause of facilitating Mustang adoptions all over the United States. We have to thank Pamela for stopping by the store(even in this crazy weather)to share her love of horses with us and make sure to keep an eye out for future events with her and “Ripley and the Traveler.”

Hey everyone! If you were wondering why there were all these wild animals running around the store, have no fear, it was some amazing kids in masks. Today at our free Summer Kids Events, Kidz Art was with us making lion, tiger, cat and dog masks. The kids did a great job creating and decorating these fantastic masks. The Girl Scouts were on hand as well making beautiful mosaics--rainbows and butterflies! Check out the pictures from this awesome event! Music hour is so much fun--every last Tuesday of the month we gather all our recyclable stuff meet in the kids corner and make instruments! Beans, toilet & paper towel rolls, coffee cans, yogurt containers, rice and plastic bottles are just a few of the recyclable things we use to make our instruments. Put beans in a balloon, then blow it up, and it makes a great thunder sound! Check out the good times that were had making recycled instruments on Flickr!

No need to be scared! The wild animals in our store today were merely children in disguise! You see, here at Bookmans we are celebrating the Dog Days of Summer. What that means is that all month long we have had events at all of our stores celebrating the animals in our lives. Today was no different, as we had the nice folks from Kidz Art come down and help our kids to make some pretty sweet masks. Customers coming in this morning may have thought they'd walked into a zoo with all the pandas and lions running around the living room. It was another great kids event today, and makes me all the more sad that last week is our last free summer kids event before school starts back up. Next week is our back to school party, and it's going to be a blast! Plan to come out and have some fun with balloons, face painting and some snacks!

With beaches and oceans being so far away from all of us in Phoenix, Bookmans decided to make our own fun with a beach party as a part of our summer kids events. We’ve collected all the necessary supplies to throw an awesome party that included straw hats, beach balls, tiki torches, and plastered our community room with fake fish and a pretend ocean made of crepe paper. The kids had the option to play one or all three of our fun beach games, like pin the sunglasses on the sun, where they won their very own pair of sunglasses; a dolphin ring toss game where they won mini beach balls; and a lucky duck game where the prizes were beach yo-yo’s. We ordered up two sandcastle cupcake cakes which were devoured instantly and enjoyed with a cold juice box. While it’s still pretty hot outside, we cooled off and had a great time with our indoor activities. Thanks to over 60 of our tiny customers who came out for the festivities and we’ll see you next week for Star Wars story time! Check out pics on Flickr.

Wednesday nights at Bookmans Ina have become a thing of legend. Fierce warriors, treacherous goblins, fair maidens and other creatures of fantasy inhabit the store from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Thankfully, all these things are only in the imaginations of the members of the Wednesday Knight Nerds! W.K.N. is a group that meets weekly (or bi-weekly, depending on your preferred game) and plays Magic: The Gathering (every week) and Dungeons & Dragons (every other week). Formed in late May, the W.K.N. has grown to nearly thirty members and continues to grow each week. It's a lot of fun for all involved and a great place to meet some new friends (real or imaginary). Hey everyone! Today we had a visitor named Jesus from the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum! Today even the reptiles got to take a break from the heat and come chill out in our store for a little while! Since we weren't able to take everyone out to the Desert Museum, they brought a few scaly creatures by to make friends with our youngsters. The hour-long presentation was filled with fun and interesting facts about some of the creatures that, as Tucsonans, we can find right outside our very doors! We learned that despite appearances, snakes do in fact have bones, and also a very good reason not to pick up a Desert Tortoise (unless you are helping them to cross the street, of course). Summer Kids Events at Bookmans are beginning to wind down with only two events left! Don't miss out on the fun! Our events are Tuesdays at 10 a.m. at the Ina location!

To celebrate the dog days of summer and everything animal-related in July, we welcomed, for the first time, the Any Rat Rescue. This non-profit organization specializes in rescuing, fostering and finding homes for affectionate rats that can sometimes be ignored due to a negative stigma about them. Domestic rats are actually much different than wild rats and most people don’t really know that information. It’s like comparing dogs to wolves! The volunteers from Any Rat Rescue shared with us that cats, dogs and children can generally come to get along with rats and they are fairly easy to tend to, much like a ferret actually. We snapped a picture (blurry, but the best we could get) of one of the foster rats, Travis, whose lovely white coat and unusual dumbo ears made him a Bookmans favorite! You can catch the Any Rat Rescue again at our Animal Fair this upcoming Saturday on July 24 where they’ll be set up for more rat meet and greets and information about what they do. While some people were no doubt getting out of the heat today by going to the movie theater, where they were sure to see commercials with the lovable Fandango puppets, we were busy making puppets of our own! At Bookmans Ina we were brown bagging it today, but these aren't your grandma's plain old brown bags! With an assortment of googly eyes and fuzzies we built our own Fandango puppets to show off to friends and family! Some were more traditional (two eyes, one nose, one mouth), while others could have been something straight out of a Sci-Fi movie featuring five or more eyes or completely covered in fuzz... or both! It's so great to see all the imagination that the kids bring to these crafts and to say that all the puppets were amazing would be an understatement.

Six months have passed since Bella Swan ran off to Italy to rescue her vampire soulmate Edward, forsaking her best friend and newly turned werewolf, Jacob. There she met the Volturi, the governing law of vampire society, who ruled that Bella was to be turned immediately. It's this poem that foreshadows the entire events of the film defining both the love triangle between Bella, Edward, and Jacob and how vampires are dispatched.

These patriotic bugs came to life and swarmed, flapped and buzzed their way through out our community room and sales floor. Everyone who attended also went home with an American flag that they proudly waved and shook. The kids promised us they would whip out the flags during their 4th of July celebrations and especially during the fireworks display to show off their American pride and honor all of this great countries presidents and soldiers who have worked and fought so bravely for our freedom. The fun of our Summer Kids Events never seems to end as this week we welcomed back Gerry from Guitars in the Classroom for a special “Beats and Rhythm” class. Every child who attended received their very own special set of wooden maracas and with the help of Gerry, they learned all about the instruments origins, sounds and how to play them during sing-a-long time. We learned that maracas make a similar sound to rattlesnakes and that everyone, no matter what age, can learn to play them. After an intense maraca jam session, we put on our crafty thinking caps and pulled out the brightest colors of paint we could find to turn our plain-jane maracas into groovy colorful ones. The kids personalized their instruments with stripes of all colors and took them home to dry where hopefully they continue on their musical journey. Although we worked with mini maracas, those kids sure knew how to get a big sound out of them when they played them all together. Thanks to Gerry and his wife for teaching us and for helping out with the crafting portion. See you at next weeks event where we’ll invite the Phoenix Zoo and perhaps a furry friend or two!

Yarrrrrgh! Our first Summer Kids Event ended in sword fighting all throughout the store! Wait... let's start from the beginning.

Kids at Bookmans Ina were treated to a fun, interactive pirate adventure and story time today! Cap'n Read-A-Lot stopped by the store to teach kids about a pirate's life, which included: earning nicknames (such as Ravishing Ruby the Ruthless), how to speak like a pirate ("shiver me timbers!") and a few kids even walked the plank! (They swam back to shore safely.) After listening to some pirate tales, we let the kids loose to search from some treasure in the store. After looting all the coins, jewels, and rings we could hold, we traded in our booty for balloon swords and had a good old-fashioned, swashbuckling sword fight!

The workshop was set up for four hours, and during that time he gave away a ton of DDMAU stuff and taught and played his game with people! This event was a lot of fun. Our favorite local anime club, The Across Plus Anime Club, worked with Bookmans to put together an amazing anime festival over the weekend. They kicked off the event by showing an episode of the hit anime show “DN Angel” followed by a fun-but-serious round of anime-related trivia in which they kicked it old school and the first person who raised their hand got to answer the question first for the win. Some questions seemed a bit easy, while others threw folks for a loop. Following the trivia session was an opportunity for everyone who attended the event to meet the Across Plus Anime Club individually and find out what the club and all their fun meetings are about.

It was an intense day today at Bookmans Ina, where kids turned out in droves to get their hands on the Nintendo Wii controllers and challenge their peers to a game of Super Smash Bros. Brawl!

This afternoon marked another entry in Bookmans' annual Video Game Challenge, and to say it was a success would be an understatement. For a few hours there was punching, kicking, fireballs, telekinetic throws and all other forms of combat in the living room. Of course, I'm talking about Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii! Kids 13 and under came to hang out with their friends, and as one kid explained, "do what we do every weekend anyway." Only this time, there were prizes involved!

At Bookmans, we understand how important it is to take care of our planet by recycling. We recycle merchandise every hour, of every day over our trade counters and know that every bit of product we tuck away on our bright orange shelves may be that much more waste NOT in a landfill. We live and breathe by the saying “one man's trash is another man's treasure” because every single day you can hear the ooo’s and ahhh’s of our customers as they find a book, record, video game or DVD that they had previously thought was harder to find than a unicorn or two-headed dragon.

It's 2010 and the year of the tiger. The origins of the Chinese New Year celebrations were born out of fear and myth. Legend spoke of the wild beast Nien (also the word for "year" in Mandarin) that appeared at the end of each year, attacking and killing villagers. Loud noises and bright lights were used to scare the beast away, and thus, Chinese New Year celebrations were born.

This weekend, Bookmans Mesa celebrated the beginning of the Chinese New Year with an awesome in-store bash. To celebrate such a festive holiday, one must look the part. Bookmans Ina was proud to host the Civic Orchestra of Tucson's instrument petting zoo on Saturday, June 13th. The Civic Orchestra brought out violins, violas, cellos, timpani, xylophone, trumpets and trombones for all of the kids (and plenty of adults) to pick up, hold, feel, and yes, play!

This last week has brought to light many of the changes coming to the Mesa store. When you first walk into the store, to your left, you are greeted by my oversized construction zone display. My little homage to the career of the constructionist sets the tone for the store and reflects everyones anticipation so well, even Tim Taylor himself would stand and salute.

We celebrated the Aloha Spirit at Bookmans Grant this past Friday for May Day. In Hawaii that means it's Lei Day, a day to celebrate the Hawaiian culture and the tradition of lei-making. We brought in guitarist Jamie O'Brien to play some slack-key favorites and enjoyed some "ono pupus" from Lani's Luau (including SPAM musubi, an island favorite). I met a few homesick Hawaiians and we enjoyed the Island vibes together.

We always appreciate when one of our customers takes the time to blog about us, but sometimes we're just plain blown away. Retired political consultant and full-time artist/photographer J.R. Corkrum tells his Bookmans story in a "Postcard from Tucson." It's a blog post full of photos of Bookmans Speedway and - we think - an all-encompassing portrait of what the Bookmans experience is - and should be - like.

If you happened to swing by Bookmans Grant yesterday, we apologize for any potential panic brought on by the staff's skewed sense of humor. (Honestly? We like it that way.) But in case you missed the funny...

Mustache Day started as a Speedway store tradition but observance of all things 'stache soon trickled to our other stores; now we have a time-honored tradition on our hands. As Grant Store Manager Marshall puts it: "All degrees of face whisker are encouraged, from moustache fingers to Groucho greasepainters. In fact often the most busted-looking soup strainer is a fan favorite." Big thanks to the customers and employees who made Mustache Day 2009 a big hairy success. Here's a handful of our favorite snapshots from the day - see the rest (as well as pics from past Mustache Days) in our Flickr.
