With the beginning of each new year, folks tend to reflect on the last twelve months and take a closer look at themselves. Each January, Bookmans offers events and displays that lean towards the "New Year, New You" mentality. This year we wanted to shift the focus away from the standard diet or habit quitting and look for ways to be a new you by focusing on the needs around the community.
We featured an art contest for grade school ages to raise the awareness of the damage done by bullying and held a free family movie night. All of our Saturday Craft-a-paloozas focused on creativity and self-acceptance. But the biggest success we had this month was a fantastic response from customers and crew regarding the Red Cross blood drive.

This year was my ten year high school reunion. Growing up I felt like I had a pretty good idea of what it would be like to be in high school. These ideas were formulated by a little TV show called Saved by the Bell. There were going to be jocks, geeks, preppies and the bullies in leather jackets. A huge section at the front of Bookmans Flagstaff is going to be musical instruments and equipment. We need your help to stock and shop it. Winter is coming to Flagstaff. Halloween hasn't yet passed and we've already had a bit of snow on the ground. After the collapse of our store in 2009 it's hard not to be a little leery of snowstorms. There was a time in human history when almost everything we did was decided by the seasons. When storms came our forefathers and foremothers huddled in the half dark around fires telling stories about other winters and hoping any traveling friends would survive the night. There are many ways to foster team spirit at work and it seems that the best way to an employee’s heart may be through his or her stomach. With this belief in mind we’ve decided to start a monthly culinary contest at Bookmans Flagstaff where winners get a bit of trade credit (perhaps for more cookbooks?). September was mac-stravaganza month and October will be choco-love! As we all know some food combinations are better than others, but one combination that always rules is the famous Macaroni and Cheese! It’s culinary genius.
Over the third weekend in September we had Mac-Stravaganza, a friendly (and super delicious) competition between employees, and I can safely say it was a huge success.

This morning I disrobed (I don't actually wear a robe -- robe is a weird word I won't wear) and got into the shower. I squatted down to let the brownish-red tap water run through my hands (we've been on vacation) and contemplated a plan of attack for my shower. That is, I thought to myself "First I'll shampoo. Then I'll wash my face. Next...". I became conscious of what I was contemplating. Seriously, what the funk? I shower in the same order/fashion/manner everyday of my life. Do I really need to re-examine the efficiency of my shower habits? Do I just dally and dawdle away my shower each morning? Do I need to tighten things up? Am I that pressed for time? Have I forgotten how to clean myself? Is this some early form of Alzheimer’s Disease?
This isn't actually Travis, just how we like to imagine him in the shower.

I recently celebrated two milestones, my sixth year of being employed at Bookmans and two years of handling Community Relations for our Phoenix and Mesa locations. It seems like only yesterday I was working behind a hotel front desk when one of our guests told me he was the contractor for a new bookstore opening up around the corner. Imagine my excitement when I found out who it was. I had been shopping at the Mesa and Flagstaff locations for about five years at that point. The next day he brought in a business card for the store's manager and said they were hiring. I sent off my resume and received a call back to schedule an interview. Based on previous experiences, I had dressed up but felt over-dressed when I was greeted by a gentlemen wearing a Ramones t-shirt and beanie cap.

Since returning to work at the newly reopened Bookmans Flagstaff, my two-year-old has decided it's a great time to start getting her molars. Despite painkiller dosing, she's been awake an average of two hours each night, usually between 3 and 5 a.m. Of course, we have to get up at 6 a.m. in order for everyone make it to work and school on time. Here it is, almost a year since I received that fateful call, “The roof of the Flagstaff store has fallen in,” my first thought was some friend is messing with me, uh yeah, sure whatever, no really the snow caved in the roof. Some days I just wake up feeling pissy. This morning, I'd already been up three times in the night with a teething toddler, it was four a.m., the fire had died, it was dipping below sixty degrees in the house, and, to add insult to injury, I realized I was out of coffee. I stood at the counter contemplating throwing my french press across the kitchen, as I might have done before I became a mother. I just leaned on the counter for a moment, collecting myself. I'm not a morning person, but I am blessed with a lark for a child. Just put one foot in front of the other, I told myself.
“Are you sad mommy?” my two-year-old asked me.
“Yes, hon, a little.” I responded. I let myself take a few more moments, bent over my empty coffee can.
“Please take your head out of your hands,” Max told me, “it's not time for whining.”
I had to laugh, hearing my own words echoed back to me this way. But she was right, the time for whining had passed. “How 'bout we read Hop on Pop?” Maxine suggested. I made some strong black tea, banked the fire, bundled a blanket around my child and I, and settled in for some Dr. Seuss.

My mom was not a cook. She did encourage us to cook though, and never made the kitchen off limits, which is possibly the best gift I ever received. My mom cooked on holidays. It was a production that we went through two or three times a year. The Ducharme Household Presents: The Holiday Meal! It was memorable, but not for the food or even for the production. It was great because we were together. When I was fifteen, I became a vegetarian. To my parents’ credit, they were very supportive. I spent a lot of time explaining to people that I was a vegetarian, especially at Thanksgiving. For fourteen years I had the same conversation with my mom. It went like this:
Mom: It’s Thanksgiving, what are you going to eat?
Me: Food.
Mom: But it’s Thanksgiving! We’re having Turkey! What are YOU going to eat?
Me: Mom, you’re having one turkey and seventeen side dishes…of VEGETABLES. I’ll be fine.

The Broadway Palm Theater is celebrating its 10th Anniversary Season with the Best of Broadway. First up is their production of Sugar, based on the Classic movie Some Like It Hot starring Tony Curtis and Marylin Monroe. The Broadway Palm Theater had been in talks with Actor Tony Curtis to make an appearance on their grand opening night on Oct. 8. Tragically, Mr. Curtis passed away on Sept. 30. Our deepest condolences goes out to his family, friends and fans. He is a true Hollywood legend.
As the saying goes, "the show must go on" and it did -- in style! Upon entering the theatre, patrons received the true Hollywood experience. As theatergoers walked the red carpet, flashbulbs popped, arrivals announced, and "stars" collide. Each guest mingled with the likes of Lady Gaga and Josephine Baker. Many of the regular folk in attendance arrived in the spirit of the event, dressed as Dale Evans, Audrey Hepburn, Truman Capote, Keanu Reeves and Tina Fey. A contest was held for best costume, and the dead ringer for Tina Fey won a trip to Chicago to tour the sites of the Gangsters. How jealous am I? Why, oh why, didn't I dress up?

She spins and the anticipation is killing her. The overcast skies provided a welcome relief on Tuesday morning. With temperatures still over 100 degrees most of this past week, I started wondering when the Arizona summer would start winding down. Believe it or not, there once was a time in my life when I could do a yoga pose called “the scorpion” that involved doing a handstand (yes, a handstand) while touching my toes to the top of my head. Now, I'm lucky if I can touch my fingers to my toes while standing upright. I used to attend Ashtanga yoga classes about five days a week, and even taught some. Now, I'm lucky if I make it to a class once every two weeks. This is all part of motherhood, professionalism, responsibility. Boring, right?

Thursday morning, Sept. 23, I attended the press conference for the brand new Shift Arizona campaign created by the amazing individuals of Local First Arizona. Watching Kimber Lanning speak is always a pleasure. A true power-house for her local community and the entire state of Arizona, Kimber explained to us the large impact of changing a small percentage of our spending habits. I absolutely love the tag line, "A local shift, a big lift for your community." By taking on the simple goal of shifting 10% of your spending habits to support a locally owned business you can make a big impact. When you spend in Arizona, your money stays in Arizona. Shopping local takes a little more effort, however it doesn't have to cost you any more money. Using the Local First Arizona business directory, you can quickly find out if there is a local alternative to your needs. I personally have been doing what I can to create new spending habits. I've realized that it's not that difficult and I feel much better knowing I am doing what I can to support my immediate community.
Considering Bookmans' backing of film screenings for Naked Lunch, A Clockwork Orange, and The Life of Brian for our Fight Censorship month it seems apropos to discuss attempts to reign in movie makers under the Hays Code. Actually, it was the Motion Picture Production Code, but that's boring, so everyone just referred to it by the author's name, Will H. Hays. What? You don't know about the Hays Code? Okay, I didn't know about the Hays Code, so I did the googles thing and discovered it was created in 1926 and formally adopted in 1934 by The Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (now the Motion Picture Association of America) to squash freedom of expression for movie makers without federal intervention.

For five of my six years at Bookmans, my job has included event planning in Phoenix and Mesa. Let me tell you, it's a labor of love to bring to you, our beloved customers, the polished end-product. It is also one of my favorite parts of the job. I enjoy working with the Events Liaisons, Todd and Yvette, as a team to brainstorm new and fun ways to make annual events better than the last. We are constantly finding ways to breathe new life into every day activities. At Bookmans we don't feel restricted by the idea that we are "just a bookstore". Thinking outside of the "big box” makes room for the inspiration to create engagements that you would never imagine doing in a bookstore.
Almost everyone in my family is a lawyer, and they've all been trial lawyers at one time or another. My mother once told me that whenever she would get really nervous to stand in front of a judge, or, on occasion, the whole supreme court, she would imagine that the judges were all sitting on their toilets, taking a poo. She said it reminded her that whatever our jobs and responsibilities, we're all human. Her internal giggle made it possible to start her case.

"It's a free country!" I taunted my parents when they attempted to crush my efforts at expression. Growing up in a military town in Oklahoma, I felt the power of those words to the core of my being. It was drilled into every freedom loving student at East Side Elementary. Is there anything more patriotic than such a declaration? Of course, we all know what a load of crap that is where sassy kids and their parents are concerned, but even as an well-aged citizen of the good ole U.S. of A. my free speech has boundaries. According to the Art Law Library, those limits include obscenity, fighting words, fraudulent misrepresentation, advocacy of imminent lawless behavior, and defamation.
Are you kidding me? I happen to think fart jokes are obscene, but it's a staple of children's programming. Slurrs against the Sooners are fighting words in my home. I have purchased more than one crappy book based on bogus reviewer claims from the back cover. What's more American than civil disobedience? I'd love to see a day go by without bogus celebrity news flashing across my computer screen.

When I walked into Madcap Theaters and took a seat, I had no idea what an experience the evening would be. You can watch the trailers and read the fine print on their website, but nothing will prepare you for Everything is Terrible II: Tokyo Drift.
I thought I was going to watch a collection of clips from the long lost media known as VHS [insert dramatic music]. What I experienced was two hours of said clips, but also short intermissions of audience participation and appearances by the Everything is Terrible monsters themselves. Who knew that the creators were a bunch of seven foot tall, furry, and extremely excitable creatures who enjoy VHS tapes, Jerry Maguire, and high fives?!

I find that on a daily basis, I see more people plugged into things than not. Sometimes I am only vaguely aware of them and on days like today, I am severely annoyed. Are we truly this narcissistic and bored on a societal level that we cannot run errands (or pee) without updating, texting, or talking to someone else? I’ve observed a coworker walking from one side of the warehouse to the other texting--apparently they felt the need to text someone unknown about their journey. I have wasted many minutes talking to someone only to find that they had ear buds in and could not hear me. We have become part Borg. I look around and my coworkers are hunched at computer terminals with wires coming from their heads attached to many small devices.

Read More...In honor of the last day of animal month here at Bookmans, we welcomed local author, Pamela Venezio to share with our Bookmans kids about the plight and joys of the beautiful Mustang horses all over the country. Pamela and her husband both grew up around live horses and together share a vast love for them and informed us of the training and adoption process of a Mustang which includes: 90 days with a professional trainer and a show to follow that the Mustang displays its newly trained skills so that everyone can see what gracious and intelligent creatures they are in order to make the proper adoption decisions.
Pamela shared with us her new book, "Ripley and the Traveler,” which follows a true store about a captured Mustang horse and their journey through the training process while his new friend, Ripley the dog, helps along the way and has beautiful illustrations to follow. The book is very in unique in that it also “grows” with the child as the first part of it geared towards children under seven with shorter sentences and larger print while the other half is for children over seven with more complex lessons and writing. It’s a great two-for-one deal! Part of the proceeds of this book benefit the Mustang Heritage Foundation to help with their great cause of facilitating Mustang adoptions all over the United States. We have to thank Pamela for stopping by the store(even in this crazy weather)to share her love of horses with us and make sure to keep an eye out for future events with her and “Ripley and the Traveler.”

When I was just a little girl, not much older than my daughter is now, I was allowed to stay up late during thunderstorms. Despite all the rain in Washington State, true T-storms were unusual. My mother and I would usually gather some cookies and milk (mint chocolate remains our favorite) and get cozy on the couch facing our big picture window in the living-room. I still remember the orange and yellow seventies style drapes we would hook back from the window, how we'd pull a blanket over our knees and settle in as if preparing to watch a movie. Then, when the thunder boomed and the lightening cracked, we'd scream and marvel.

My daughter is currently getting her two-year-old molars, and it's almost mommy-suicide time. I've had a day or two lately, full of tantrums and night wakings, where I've wondered, “Couldn't I get my hands on some of that sleep potion they had in Romeo and Juliet, and just skip a few days?” But, alas, she needs me. I can feel the little mountains of teeth pushing up through her sensitive little gums, and I know she must be uncomfortable. But sometimes I wish I could lay down on the floor, beat it with my fists and scream because I'm uncomfortable and still need to go to work, clean the house, do the never-ending laundry...
Adulthood can suck. That being said, one good thing about having a toddler is vicarious childhood- I get to run in the sprinkler, moo in the grocery story, and read books about talking possums. I feel a sense of accomplishment when I sing “head, shoulders, knees, and toes” without missing a beat. All this while my childless friends are publishing books and getting Fulbright scholarships. “Once a Fulbright, always a Fulbright” is what they say. Well, good for you, motherhood is the same way – you're branded for life.

I'll admit, when I was first introduced to Twitter by my employers here at Bookmans I secretly thought it was irrelevant (why do I care what everyone is thinking and doing?), narcissistic ('now I'm grocery shopping' – who cares?), childish (I pictured silly teens tweeting away, the twits) and cacophonous (so many people speaking at once!). But I'm going to admit it; I was wrong about Twitter.
Twitter is a social network, but that's only a part of what it is. I have enjoyed meeting folks I wouldn't otherwise have connected with, including the mayor, college students, local nonprofit directors, stay-at-home moms – all kinds of people. Surprisingly, the average Twitter user isn't a teenager with a bunch of piercings (nothing wrong with piercings!) but a 30-ish professional like myself.
And Twitter is great for marketing. I can let a bunch of folks know about Bookmans events, sponsorships, and other news in real time. I can direct people to websites, attach pictures and video, share other people's jokes, news, updates and answer their questions – instantly. It's this real time quality of Twitter that makes it so neat.
The coolest use of Twitter, in my opinion, is as a news service. You have probably already heard that we currently have the biggest wildfire in the U.S. raging just north of Flagstaff. Over 1000 structures have been evacuated, over 10,000 acres are burning. I live on the side of town where the fire is closest, and when I first saw the huge column of smoke from downtown Flag, I thought of my partner and one-year-old, napping away in our house nestled against the smoking mountain. Hello, summer! I was watching the news this morning as the anchor bantered with a guest about the low temperature of 90 degrees the city of Phoenix is experiencing this weekend like it was something to look forward to. My response? Hot is hot! I am a native Arizonan. I have lived here my entire life in various parts of our great state. While Flagstaff is nice to visit, I have recently discovered that I loathe freezing temperatures and snow. Who knew?
What I enjoy about Phoenix is that you can always count on the warmth of the sun. Like many others, I will never enjoy 45 minute treks across the Valley while my love, the sun, blazes down upon my car with 110 degree temperatures. But I welcome her brightness into my bedroom every morning.

The magazine’s subtitle could be “A magazine for over-educated, over-articulate nerds.” Which might seem insulting if it didn’t describe so many of my friends and coworkers (and, of course, myself). Last month’s issue gave a list of recommended books, one of which included “The Cardboard Universe, A Guide To The World Of Phoebus K. Dank” by Christopher Miller. Being a huge fan of the life and work of Philip K. Dick, the obvious target of this parody, I was intrigued.

My brother and I grew-up on a golf course, and we have since learned that our well water was full of pesticides. My brother developed an aggressive choriocarcinoma at age twenty-nine. He lives, after over a year of brutal treatments, but it's hard not to wonder why this happened. After an initial round of chemo and a 13-hour surgery didn't get rid of my brother's cancer, the doctor said it was time to “bring in the big guns,” otherwise known as high-dose chemo. It seems counter-intuitive to use something so deadly and toxic to save a life, but, in brother's case, it was necessary.

Three things that really chap my hide this week: Law and Order got canceled, James Bond needs a bail out, and Spring in Flagstaff only got to “Sp” leaving the “ring” part to be blown away with a cold front featuring 45mph winds. People (and Mother Nature) should really seek my approval before canceling anything.
The first annoying cancellation: Spring. I rant on the weather a lot here so I’ll be brief: this spring is painfully cold and windy. I am currently wearing three layers and need extra weight in my messenger bag so I don’t get blown down when walking to work. Weather sucks. End weather rant.

Since 2005, The Arizona Derby Dames (AZDD) have been the fastest growing all-girl roller derby in the state of Arizona. The AZDD was founded by four women, Suzy Homewrecker (XXX), Joan Threat (50), All The Way Mae (213) and Prima Donna (32), who were all originally players in the Arizona Roller Derby League. That first season, I remember watching only three teams bout against one another--The Coffin Draggers, The Brutal Beauties, and The Bombshells. Over the next few years, The School Yard Scrappers and The Runaway Brides were added to the roster.

The 2010 Bookmans Reading Challenge may be over, but the kids at South Point Elementary are still going strong! With only 424 students, South Point Elementary read over 11,000 books in three months. Almost every single student increased their reading ability by two levels and the students are more excited about reading than ever. Today, I awarded the students for their dedication with an assembly. Heidi Bonfante, their reading mentor, and I spoke about the importance of reading and awarded their top performers in the school. With thunderous applause these lovely young ladies humbly accepted their bags of Bookmans goodies. Afterward, I was able to chat with the children and we all shared cookies. I heard that yesterday, Mrs. Henderson's fourth grade class had a field trip to Bookmans Phoenix where Miss Yvette showed them around the entire store and rewarded them with a party for reading the most books during the month of March. Congratulations South Point Elementary, your kids rock!

I love my dog almost as much as my other family members. He’s an Airedale Terrier named Reggie who was so shy and sweet as a puppy that we almost named him Rambo as a joke. He was the runt of the litter, and the breeder’s “defect” puppy, since he has a pink nose (not the standard black), is small, and has crooked teeth. Reggie got to spend more time with his mama since no one wanted him, and I think that’s part of why he’s so sweet.

I love the smell of sunscreen and sweat. There’s something about human smells mixed with the chemical coconut smell that makes me happy. Maybe it’s the familiarity of the smells, like a doorway into simpler childhood times. Saturday, at the Flagstaff Earth Day Festival, we had sunscreen and sweat in abundance. There was also a familiar sight to go along with the olfactory memories, the return of the Flagstaff Trade Counter. It didn’t look exactly the same, but standing on one side going through boxes, bags and handing out trade was great. We got to open a new pack of deal cards, the first we’ve used since the roof collapse, and tell people “Give us about 15 to 20 minutes to go thru this.” Everything was so familiar, like when you camp out. You’re still cooking, but outside.

I don’t know about you, but my 18-month-old daughter and I start to melt down if we spend too much time in the house. That’s why we dig worms out of the garden whenever we can. We also take a magnifying glass outside to look at pinecones, take walks (slowly) in the woods, wash stones in bowls of bubbly water, catch and study bugs, go to Thorpe or Bushmaster park (Maxine calls it “wheee!”), or go get a juice and coffee at Late for the Train and run around Heritage Square. We also go visit our friends farm (in progress) or head to the Arboretum and catch the raptor show if we’re lucky. Unfortunately, there are spring days in Flag when your hat flies off and your eyes fill with grit if you outside; you know the type. That’s when we have to get creative.

My family spent much of Easter evening tearing out our front lawn. Since Matt works nights (as a critical care RN) and sleeps days, he continued late into the night tearing-up roots and digging-out rocks—hopefully without frightening our neighbors! In our usual overly-ambitious style (which, in the past has included getting an Airdale puppy just before a new baby, and frogs for a 1-year-old) we’ve decided to plant a high-altitude, low-water, clay under the grass, short season, we-don’t-even-know-how-to-start-a-seed garden! My eyes are sore from post-baby-bedtime hours of laptop reading about high-altitude gardening, and scanning all the images of incredible gardens-of-Eden, meticulously cultivated at 6,7, or, in our case, almost 8000 feet above sea level.
