To celebrate the dog days of summer and everything animal-related in July, we welcomed, for the first time, the Any Rat Rescue. This non-profit organization specializes in rescuing, fostering and finding homes for affectionate rats that can sometimes be ignored due to a negative stigma about them. Domestic rats are actually much different than wild rats and most people don’t really know that information. It’s like comparing dogs to wolves! The volunteers from Any Rat Rescue shared with us that cats, dogs and children can generally come to get along with rats and they are fairly easy to tend to, much like a ferret actually. We snapped a picture (blurry, but the best we could get) of one of the foster rats, Travis, whose lovely white coat and unusual dumbo ears made him a Bookmans favorite! You can catch the Any Rat Rescue again at our Animal Fair this upcoming Saturday on July 24 where they’ll be set up for more rat meet and greets and information about what they do. Check out the Flickr pictures.

For the seventh year in a row, the Devastation Gaming Event, Expo & Tournament, brings professional gaming to a new level in the city of Phoenix. This year an all new VIP event was added to the Thursday night programming for the weekend. A relaxing event where industry professionals, gamers, supporters, and the Devastation crew were able to hang out before the big event. Games were open for casual gaming, while the Bookmans Retro Game Zone rocked out titles such as Bubble, Bobble & TMNT: Tournament Fighters. I had a great time casually meeting the guests and am looking forward to the next three days of gaming insanity! If you are interested in checking Devastation out and live in Phoenix come on down! Free to attend all weekend long.

A lot of time and love has gone into the decision making that it required to come up with the really cool items that we will have available for the convention attendees.
This year everyone will be spinning our prize wheel, hoping to win one of our exclusive Bookmans Phoenix Comicon t-shirts. My favorite part? It's always free to win Bookmans schwag! What I am really looking forward to over the weekend is to see months of planning come together for the First Annual Kids Need to Read Geek Prom that Bookmans is sponsoring.

Over at our Mesa store, we teamed up with the Devastation team and hosted a Super Street Fighter IV tournament for teens and adults 14 and older. The competition was tough indeed, with a huge tournout! More than 50 matches were played, but only one came away with champion's bragging rights. After the dust cleared, "Juicebox" was our grand prize winner, with "Mr. SNK" and "Flook" coming in a close second and third, respectively. A special thanks to Robb and the Devastation team for helping us out with this event.

The weather could not have been more inviting last week at Margaret T. Hance Park in Central Phoenix where we celebrated the 2010 El Dia De Los Ninos. This event has been celebrated since 1925, El Dia De Los Ninos translates to Day of the Child. The day recognizes children, pays homage to their importance in society, celebrates diversity, and teaches the children about how to become a strong community member. I never grow tired of book bag decorating with kids, it is so much fun to watch their spirit come alive and their creativity flow. Check out our Flickr photos here.

According to the ticker on this website, Bookmans has purchased over 22 million pieces of merchandise! That means that every single piece was re-used and we kept it from being thrown away.

Awarded with the honor of “Best Neighborhood Street Festival” by the Phoenix New Times in 2009, the 9th Annual Melrose on 7th Street Fair was full of fun, family, and community! Starting on 7th Avenue and Indian School everyone walked down the street filled with a local market of artists, food, children's activities, live music, street performers, and a collectible car show. Walking down the street I spotted Kimber Lanning of Local First Arizona, Kathy Cano-Marillo, the “Crafty Chica” and local celebrity Brad Perry performing live music in front of Two Hippies Breakfast Joint. I tried so hard to resist the mouth watering smell of kettle corn, lemonade, and pulled pork sandwiches.

I come to work every single day to a group of people who are just as passionate, caring, and giving as I am. My favorite part of the day is walking through the door and having a handful of employees greet me with a wave or smile. Granted, we all have our “off days”, but those are few and far between.

Exhibitors of all types and services were set up at the Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force Museum to show off what our beautiful city has to offer. Bookmans was on hand providing attendees with free Bookmans Cafe House Blend coffee samples and delectable pastries, just a small sample of what we offer at our new Cafe at our Mesa store! Not only did attendees have a quick pick me up and breakfast, but everyone was able to take home a free book and brand new Bookmans tote bag. Who could resist free coffee, pastries, and a book? I know I couldn't!

Legend spoke of the wild beast Nien (also the word for "year" in Mandarin) that appeared at the end of each year, attacking and killing villagers. Loud noises and bright lights were used to scare the beast away, and thus, Chinese New Year celebrations were born.
This weekend, Bookmans Mesa celebrated the beginning of the Chinese New Year with an awesome in-store bash. To celebrate such a festive holiday, one must look the part. We were joined by Dawn from "Shys Designs," whose extraordinary face painting talents at face painting transformed all of our faces into tigers of all colors and stripes.

His soulful, self-written composition and lyrics delighted customers as they shopped for their favorite used games and DVDs. He's a familiar face at the Bookmans in Flagstaff, but traveled down to the Phoenix store to share his talent with West Valley and for that we are grateful and truly enjoyed this original artist's skills! We hope to see him again in Phoenix soon. You can check out photos from the event here on our Flikr page.

First, Infinite Wellness Chiropractic was in-store offering FREE five minute chair massages. Their highly-trained staff demonstrated how a relaxing massage can contribute to a healthy lifestyle. After each massage, customers enjoyed a bottle of water to rehydrate and given the opportunity to have any of their questions answered by the staff.
The word "grindhouse" is an American term for theaters that show mainly exploitation films, while the word "redux" means being brought back or a return. Last week The Midnite Movie Mamacita brought back the sorely missed Grindhouse Redux to MadCap Theaters in Tempe with The Tattoo Connection and The Final Comedown. How can you not enjoy a double dose of awesome with appearances by Jim Kelly and Billy Dee Williams?

Personally, I enjoy sewing, paper arts and drawing in my free time. However, at Bookmans we have some incredibly talented people!
