So, I’ll confess something embarrassing to you right now: I went to the emergency room this year with dehydration. In other words, I got super dizzy and tachycardic because I forgot to drink water. My veins were collapsed. And this from someone who is constantly plying her child with a sippy cup.

She always takes a moment to say hello to everyone and smile at those who walk past. Upon meeting Jessika, I instantly knew she was a perfect fit for our Bookmans family! She has an incredible energy and motivation that you can feel upon shaking her hand.

When it comes to clothes, they all wear XL tall, which can be hard to find unless I order early on the internet, which isn’t likely. My brother, father, stepfather and partner are all pretty picky about their music. They make fun of my musical taste, which they call “sad-girl indie.” Usually, they want stuff like rare LPs, nice cameras, electric guitars, violent games for their X-boxes, survival manuals and other stuff I’ve never heard of in my life.

Kids also had a fabulous time making one-of-a-kind stockings to take home with the help of the talented art instructors at Kidz Art. And customers enjoyed the convenience of FREE gift wrapping courtesy of Bookmans and the lovely ladies at Altrusa International Tucson.

Amy took over the Bookmans intercom and read overhead, “Twas the Night Before Christmas” for all of our shoppers to enjoy! Saturday, we celebrated the season with a creative gingerbread craft that engaged the entire family. Shoppers enjoyed gingerbread cookies while making their very own gingerbread ornaments and gingerbread friends to take home. Bookmans followed the craft with a musical performance by the Raintree Recording Group based right here in Phoenix.

Everyone was excited to stand in line waiting for their caricature to be drawn while they sipped their coffee. Children wanted drawings of their parents, and parents wanted some of their children. They made an excellent gift for the ones you love. A special thanks to Leo for coming in and blessing us all with his talent.

Until I was dropping off materials this past week for the upcoming Bookmans Reading Challenge, I honestly had not driven to a lot of these places. I've truly learned how large our city is. And I'm aware that I've only conquered a portion of it both personally and professionally. I was curious about how big the city really is, so what did I do? I googled it!

His fourth Christmas, he spent about two weeks hauling around a large green foil-wrapped box with a huge bow that he was sure must contain a) the best Lego thing ever invented, b) a puppy, or c) a trip into outer space. It was from his uncle, and none of us knew what the box contained, although we always loved the elaborate and shiny wrap. This uncle was a real hit-or-miss kind of guy, the type who never sends a gift-card and always takes a holiday gamble. I can honestly say that some of my most beloved and most laughable gifts came from him.

Mike, a real life conductor from the Grand Canyon Railway delighted children at Bookmans Phoenix with a live reading of "The Polar Express" by Chris Van Allsburg. The conductor knew the story all too well as he also is the conductor for the Polar Express train in Flagstaff which takes you to the North Pole in Arizona and even picks up Santa Claus on the way!

Over 200 kids of all ages decorated their free Bookmans Canvas Bag to carry their street fair purchases in personalized style. Participating in events like the street fair always reminds me of the wonderful diversity of local artisans and craftspeople that call Tucson home, and how lucky we are to be part of such a wonderful community. Thanks to everyone who stopped by the Bookmans tables for a morning of craft-tacular fun!

I was listening for a sound-a sound a friend had told me I'd never hear- the ringing bells of Santa's sleigh" - Chris Van Allsburg. Bookmans Mesa was delighted to present a reading of the classic children's book "The Polar Express" read by the Grand Canyon Railway's Polar express conductor himself!

I was there to share information with the students and their parents about our Read 10, Get 1 Free Book Program and the Kids Club. Never did I imagine that I would meet one of the most enigmatic and engaging community partners! Ellen Dean is the Arizona Coordinator for BookPALS, an all-volunteer literacy program sponsored by the Screen Actors Guild Foundation. Performing arts and trained community volunteers invest their time in disadvantaged schools and read to classes of children every single week. That small investment in time makes a huge impact on the lives of these children.

When I was a kid, and even after we’d left home, my brother and I insisted that our family be very ritualistic about Christmas. We had to eat dinner as a family on Christmas Eve, and then we turned-out all the lights but the tree, and sat listening to Willie Nelson’s “Pretty Paper” on the record player while drinking eggnog with nutmeg. We would open one present apiece, unless, of course, there were an uneven number of presents, in which case the person with the most presents would open more until we had an even number for Christmas morning!

Kallie, a golden retriever and my parents’ current dog, is a huge love bug and lapdog. My current dog, Reggie, is an Airedale, but a breeder reject due to his pink nose (a fatal flaw, apparently), is best friend to us all, including my 13-month-old daughter Maxine. He is gentle, funny, and affectionate. We adopted him about six months before my daughter was born, and I realize that, for my daughter, he will always have been a part of our family. I can’t even begin to think of the day that he’ll leave us.
