It's over? Already? Phoenix Comicon 2011 attracted people en mass over an extended four-day Memorial Day weekend. We were impressed with its growth in 2010 but were blown away this year. The convention extended over five floors in the Phoenix Convention Center along with additional programming at the Hyatt Regency in Downtown Phoenix. Phoenix Comicon Director Matt Solberg says that 24,000 memberships were sold, not including free youth admissions. That's 10,000 more than last year! You can find a letter thanking the attendees and exhibitors for their time and ideas for 2012 on the Phoenix Comicon website.
We made our own thank you in video form to everyone for stopping by our booth or supporting the Bookmans sponsored KNTR Geek Prom.
While it was missed by many, we retired our prize wheel this year to try something new. Thousands welcomed our Bookmans Photo Booth where we encouraged everyone to geek out with the Bookmans Crew. Geeking out is more than half the fun as many put on our silly props and word bubbles to show off in picture form. Everyone went home with an exclusive Bookmans "Geeking Out Is Half The Fun" photo magnet to show off their souvenir. Many of you purchased our Geeking Out T-shirts, which made their debut in our booth, and politely reminded us that Geeking Out is ALL the fun! We wholeheartedly agree. You may have seen guest appearances in our booth by Silk Spectre and Mario. Big thanks to Max Brooks, Wil Wheaton and P.J. Haarsma who also stopped by and showed support.

Shiver me timbers to our super successful April Hunt Edition of the Bookmans Treasure Hunt -- The Search For Local Business Booty had us skipping down the aisles. Many thanks to the Local First Arizona business that hid the prize package including movie theater tickets, a BOB coupon, a stuffed sheep, a $25 local business gift certificate and Tucson Roller Derby Tickets to our devoted fans who used their noggins and the clues to find the booty (you sprogs brought tears to our eyes). Though we distributed no doubloons each prize package was worth $85 and in this economy we could all use some awesomely free stuff.

You may have heard her tragic story on the local news, saw her interview on Montel or read about it in the newspaper. Tracy Stombres, a valley woman whose struggle with domestic violence caused an end to her marriage and, even more disheartening, an end to her mother's life. Authors Tracy Stombres and Stephanie Angelo visited Bookmans Phoenix for an author signing and lecture surrounding their book, Serrated: A True Story of Survival, Recovery and the Pursuit of Justice.

Our Flagstaff slewfoots snooped their way to fortune once again last week in the May edition of our Twitter treasure hunt. What were our under-140 character clues? Here they are: 1) What local business is located next door to a place that once hosted Vaudeville? 2) What kind of boat goes under water? 3) This biz is portside of the stage, Italian, with patio. The answer? Stage Left Sub Shop of course! All five lucky Twitter followers got a bag of free goodies by using these clues to find the local shop, walk on in and say, “I love Bookmans!”

Bookmans Flagstaff held our awesome video game challenge and it was a great time! The kids played Cars for the X-Box 360 and the adults played the super awesome new Mortal Kombat, also for the X-Box 360. The new Mortal Kombat is amazing, particularly in high-definition on on a 55” LED TV. We had tough competition -- some of our former champs were knocked out in the first or second round!

Hello Bookmans World! I remember coming to Bookmans as a kid, getting a tour around the store and seeing how it all works! I loved it so much! Little did I know that one day I would be the guy giving the tours! It has to be one of my most favorite parts about working here. The kids and people are blown away at the amount of work that goes into making a store like this function. Seeing the shrinkwrap machine and the employees break room are some of the favorite highlights on the tour. At the end of each tour we all put our hands in the center together and yell PEACE AND LOVE! Sending our good vibes out into the world!

Find us on Flickr to check out pictures from tours past. Have a great day! PeaceLove
Read More...Good day Bookmans world! Mata Ortiz is a small pottery-making village that is built on stream terraces along the west bank of the Palanganas River in the northwestern part of the Mexican state of Chihuahua. John V. Bezy and Stuart D. Scott have put together a most beautiful book about the artistry and history of Mata Ortiz. They shared there wonderful adventures and all they have learned with a power point presentation at Bookmans Speedway.

The pottery for sale is made by many of the artists featured in their book. Joining them was master artist Oralia Lopez, creating finely executed geometric pottery designs right before your very eyes. Thank you for joining us for this very enlightening presentation of the incredible artistry and history of Mata Ortiz. Find us on Flickr to see video and pictures. PeaceLove

I recently finished Patti Smith’s memoir of her youth, Just Kids, and found it was one of those potentially life-altering books. I can’t imagine what would be better than being known as the “godmother of punk”, being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and winning a National Book Award -- all while raising two kids and fostering abiding friendships and creating many kinds of art. She even toured with Bob Dylan. Now that’s a life well-lived!

Good day Bookmans Universe! Bookmans is celebrating anything and everything Video Game this month. Our friend Clayton Barnes plays the piano and video games. Ingeniously, Clayton has combined his love for music and video games by perfecting his performance of video game theme songs on his piano.

Like an amazing tasty taco, Clayton dropped in and performed live at Bookmans Speedway. From Super Mario to Tetris, Clayton entertained us with his wonderful skill. Find us on Flicker to check out pictures and video from the event! Happy Video Game Month everyone! PeaceLove & Tacos

It was a Egg-tastic day at Bookmans Mesa when we were treated to a special visit from none other than the Easter Bunny himself! Happily walking throughout the store handing out all kinds of goodies to shoppers, the Easter Bunny was gracious enough to sit and pose for pictures that you could take home and cherish.

It’s not every day that we get to hang out with a television writing legend like Mark Rothman, who appeared at Bookmans Phoenix for an author signing and mini lecture. He flew in from Detroit to spend time with our customers and give them a sneak peak into the life of a writer, director and actor and to promote his new book Mark Rothman’s Essays. His book compiles entries from his blog sure to make you LOL. The blog focuses on the little and big events in his life that he finds humor in -– and you will too! From brief moments with friends and family to encounters with Hollywood greats, Mark wraps his readers into his somewhat dark sense of humor.

Our annual Easter egg hunt went over eggsellently! We saw over 50 antsy kids lined up outside the store before we opened with their fancy Easter baskets and ready to go on the hunt. The Easter Bunny hid over 450 eggs filled with toys and candy and our hunting team of kids found every single one of them within 20 minutes -– that might be their new record! Families worked in teams to find as many as they could and as quickly as possible.

We were excited to help the Phoenix Film Festival celebrate their 11th year in production at their annual Kids Day. Valley kids enjoyed a hands on experience that mimicked the film production processes. They started their journey at the Bookmans booth where they decorated a fight censorship souvenir bag to hold the rest of the goodies they’d make throughout the day.

In honor of Earth Month and recycling we presented a vinyl art workshop. Vinyl art is woven from the basic recycling idea of taking something not usable, in this case a scratched LP, and turning it into something usable. This was the junior edition of our popular monthly craft series, aimed at kids, but enthusiastic adults soon wanted to join in.

We’ve all played that song in our cars a little too much, accidentally let the dog get a hold of our Lord of the Rings DVD for the third time or just decided that it might be time to finally get rid of those pesky NOW CDs that we haven’t listened to in quite a while. We’re saving those old discs from a landfill fate. We held an arts and crafts class in honor of Earth Month that provided everyone with the materials and instructions for repurposing old CDs and DVDs.
