With Halloween growing nearer we're planning a host of spooktacular events including screenings of the best the horror film industry has to offer. While you're checking out our events calendar for more information, it is only fitting to discuss the absolute must have of any Halloween celebration -- the covetted scary movie. The hope that we can be scared to tears and love it sends people in droves to theaters and perpetuates these money makers from the film industry. Like dealers, the industry supplies us junkies with our fix and each year they increase the potency or introduce us to a different hysteria inducing psychotropic drug. The industry pioneers these nail biting genres with reality-based themes being the most terrifying. Films that mirror our innermost fears or characters we emotionally connect to carry us away from the safety of our theater seats. The movies that affected me the most were Child's Play 3 (when I was a kid I saw the poster in a movie rental store and it haunted me for an entire week) and The Decent (the scene where a character becomes stuck between the rock walls send me into a fist clenching, teeth grinding, panic inducing fit).

Once again some great gumshoes got a bag full of free goodies by participating in the Flagstaff edition of our Twitter Treasure Hunt. Last week’s lucky business was Local Color right downtown on San Francisco Street. If you like lovely local jewelry, bamboo eco-clothing and all kinds of great Flag-centric gifts, Local Color is a great place to go! This week you can even get 25% (wow!) off a purchase by contributing a bag of non-perishables to the the Northern Arizona Food Bank. That’s what we call caring for the local community!

Among the many reasons why it's important to promote literacy in our communities are that it helps children to succeed in school, have a higher sense of self esteem and develop positive social skills. The Storybook Express that we helped host this past weekend was a huge step in that direction. We worked together closely with our partners at the Phoenix Public Library, First Things First, PBS, Friends of the Phoenix Public Library and many more to bring the Agave Library a reading celebration like no other!

Mata Ortiz is a small pottery-making village built on stream terraces along the west bank of the Palanganas River in the northwestern part of the Mexican state of Chihuahua. John V. Bezy and Stuart D. Scott have put together a most beautiful book about the artistry and history of Mata Ortiz. John was on hand to talk about the history and culture and he answered many questions about this amazing art. Joining John was master artist Oralia Lopez, who created finely executed geometric pottery designs right before our eyes.

I’ve never considered myself a crafty person, which is ironic since I do consider myself an artist. I write and publish poetry, like to draw and paint and love to sing and dance. But when it comes to careful coloring, calligraphy, cutting a straight line, using glue guns or sewing machines and using obscure materials, I shiver in fear. Even so, the first three Mondays in October I’m going to help lead a Halloween crafting session for grown-ups in our Flagstaff cafe. Thanks goodness I’ll have the help of an ex-Girl Scout camp leader!

The books have been completed and the films have been released, but that doesn’t mean that Harry Potter fans have nothing to look forward to. Harry Potter is so beloved that we feel like he is one of our friends, that the Wesleys would invite us over during the holidays if they could and that we want to get Neville a big hug for being the unsung hero. It surprises people that such an epic franchise has its battle with censors and that the Harry Potter books are among the most frequently challenged books for young people over the past decade. With elements of magic, mischief and fear, the stories are too much for some of our youth or even some libraries. As with every book, video game, movie and piece of music, Bookmans stands firm that everyone has to right to choose for themselves and we gladly fight against censorship and those who oppose Harry Potter, which is why we once again put on our famous Hogwarts House Party.

September is Anti-Censorship Month at Bookmans and we’ll be celebrating our right to free speech in all of our stores with banned book readings and more. One year in Flagstaff we did an Anti-Censorship Kids’ Art contest and show and the art that came out of it was amazing! Kids’ associated censorship with not being allowed to make art, with being silenced and with not being allowed to read, watch or listen. Some even associated censorship with silencing the press. One teen showed a picture of a man reading a newspaper with half of the text blacked-out!

Every country in the world has banned books and most are surprised to find out that a lot of our classic favorites have made the list. We are all about keeping people educated and informed about what kind of materials are being censored and why its so important to join the fight against censorship. The Torch Theatre’s Apollo 12 joined us in that fight and provided our community with a free improv show based solely off banned books.

I can hardly believe the summer is almost over. There’s enough chill in the air in the early morning that I wear a sweatshirt out the door. The kids have all gone back to school and look so cute and fresh in their ponytails with their shiny new shoes and backpacks. College students flood our store to buy their supplemental textbooks. We are leading nervous freshman around with their lists to find their classic literature, study guides and philosophy books.

Shiver me timbers! Our super successful August Edition of the Bookmans Treasure Hunt: The Search For Local Business Booty in Tucson had us skipping down the aisles. Many thanks to the Local First Arizona member who hid the prize package including Arizona Undeground Film Festival passes, a BOB merchandise coupon and a $25 Buffalo Exchange gift certificate to our devoted fans who used their noggins and our clues to find the booty (you sprogs brought tears to our eyes). Though we distributed no doubloons each prize package was worth $155 and in this economy we could all use some awesomely free stuff as well as supporting local businesses.

Lately I’ve found myself cruising the LPs for old jazz, blues and gospel singers, and I’m doing pretty well. I recently inherited some 10” blue notes from an old family friend and now I’m really on a kick at the store. Lady Day’s Yesterdays is sung with such strangely incongruent passion and melancholy, with that gravely voice of her later days, that she brings me to tears every time. I love Etta James, Billy Holiday, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin and the more obscure Maxine Sullivan. Clearly I have a weakness for the ladies with soul.

Some neat vinyl we have at Bookmans Flagstaff includes The Mars Volta, John Peel sessions on 45, Jesus Lizard, The Damned Live in Newcastle, Public Enemy’s Hazy Shade of Criminal and a mint condition Bitches Brew. According to J.J., who’s been pricing a lot of records lately, “our electronica and hip-hop section is looking pretty awesome right now. Folks also shouldn’t miss our country, blues and jazz sections, which are pretty well stocked.”
