We're celebrating All Things Spooky during the month of October. At Bookmans Mesa we hosted a fete for all our favorite guys and ghouls with our first Monster Party! It was fun to see a variety of ages attended and participate in a variety of events.

Winter is coming to Flagstaff. Halloween hasn't yet passed and we've already had a bit of snow on the ground. After the collapse of our store in 2009 it's hard not to be a little leery of snowstorms. There was a time in human history when almost everything we did was decided by the seasons. When storms came our forefathers and foremothers huddled in the half dark around fires telling stories about other winters and hoping any traveling friends would survive the night. These days we put on our North Face down jackets, warm up our 4-wheel-drive vehicles and drive to the grocery store for milk and bananas. Or some of us do.

I'm not a huge fan of new horror movies. Pure gore just shuts off my brain and I lose interest. However, I do enjoy some horror films and shows. If I could I'd do a Twin Peaks marathon at least once a year (hooray for David Lynch!). I also loved The Silence of the Lambs and The Blair Witch Project, which I had the misfortune of watching the night before leaving on a five-day backpacking trip. But nothing compares to the first horror movies I saw when I was still in my formative years. Alien, which I saw when I was ten, made me want to be Sigourney Weaver. The Shining made me fear the gorgeous Timberline Lodge that we often visited on our family trips to the mountains and inspired my father to do an unfortunate impersonation of Jack Nicholson where he’d crack a door, stick his bearded face in and growl, “Here’s Johnny!”

Bookmans Mesa was hopping with creativity, artistry and all around all things awesome at our crafternoon. You can never go wrong when you start a Saturday morning with cupcakes. An early delivery of Sugar Skull Cupcakes from Kiki’s Cupcake Service was a pleasant surprise to our senses. These delicious red velvet cupcakes with a cream cheese center brought smiles to our faces. After we wiped away the crumbs, we settled in for our monthly crafternoon. Our beautiful Megan hosted Dia de los Muertos Cigar Box Shrines. We brought out the cigar boxes, pretty paper, scissors, glue, baubles and whatever else we could get our hands on! Everyone had a fantastic time creating a one-of-a-kind masterpiece to honor their loved ones and take home.

My heart goes out, literally out since I'm a zombie, to all who crept to Bookmans Speedway for our first ever Zombie Fair. We were inspired to host this marvelously macabre event honoring the decaying dead who have inspired a multi-million dollar movie industry, survival groups and freaky fandom the world over. Heck most of us have a zombie survival plan, however loose or detailed it may be. Bookmans Speedway was as packed, practically bursting at the seams, with the undead as Michael Jackson's Thriller video. This celebration of undead proportions wouldn't have been possible without the support of the zombie zealot community partners: The Zombie Walk, The Slaughter House, Tucson Comic Con and the Summit Hut.

When I was in college I joined thousands of activists for the first World Trade Organization (WTO) protest in Seattle in 1999. It was a huge event in the burgeoning global justice movement and I was was proud to be a small part of it. Two things triggered my memory of those few days and my mostly armchair activism: The occupation of Wall Street and a recent acquisition of gas masks in the Flagstaff store.

Thousands of Phoenicians indulged in tasty foods, fun booths and live entertainment during the 10th annual Rainbows Festival at the historic Heritage Square Park. There are many ways to foster team spirit at work and it seems that the best way to an employee’s heart may be through his or her stomach. With this belief in mind we’ve decided to start a monthly culinary contest at Bookmans Flagstaff where winners get a bit of trade credit (perhaps for more cookbooks?). September was mac-stravaganza month and October will be choco-love! As we all know some food combinations are better than others, but one combination that always rules is the famous Macaroni and Cheese! It’s culinary genius.
Over the third weekend in September we had Mac-Stravaganza, a friendly (and super delicious) competition between employees, and I can safely say it was a huge success.

OOOO! WOW! EEWWW! We started our All Things Creepy month off with a Creepy Crawly presentation from the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum! Jesus, an education specialist with the museum, was on hand with many different critters like a big hairy scorpion, a gopher snake, a giant centipede and tarantulas! He told us all about how these awesome animals find and eat their prey, what parts of the desert they live in and the different times of day and night that they are active. This was a fascinating event.

What a magical day! Students of Hogwarts arrived with their families to be sorted into one of four magical houses at Hogwarts. The Sorting Hat chose Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Gryffindor for each one. The Sorting Hat originally belonged to Godric Gryffindor but the Headmaster graciously loaned it to us for this event. Immediately the students began work on their wizarding wardrobe by creating wizard hats and house ties. Each hat was unique to its wearer with an assortment of glitter, stars, feathers, personal artwork and even eyeballs! While we feverishly worked on adorning our wares, raffles were held. Lucky winners went home with bookmarks, stickers, sweet treats from HoneyDukes and a toy Basalisk.
