Happy Day Bookmans Universe! At our last Family Game Night with open Gaming we enjoyed live music with the Amazing Diane Davis. She filled the store with her sweet songs while we worked, shopped and played games!

Hey all you die hard Twihards! We had our first ever Twilight party at Bookmans Speedway. In honor of the theatrical release of Breaking Dawn, Part 1 we kicked off what turned out to be a Team Jacob vs. Team Edward debate. Personal preferences aside everyone who came enjoyed Italian Blood Orange Soda (coutesy of the Volturi), neck bite temporary tattoos, glitter spray to make you a proper vampire, a photo opportunity with Bella and Jacob and a chance to win four pairs of tickets to the midnight showing. If that wouldn't be enough to make your heart swoon then good luck Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

My daughter wants a drum kit but they take up space and cost a pretty penny. We told her that she could take lessons and hit books configured to imitate a kit but we wouldn't buy a set until we were sure she'd stick to it. The girl likes music and with multiple musical interests (she also plays the piano and violin) we aren't sure how to support her instrumental whims. She called our drum bluff with the "we'll get you a kit if you stick to it" refrain after she hit the six-month mark of paradiddles everywhere. We'll have to get her the drums.* Besides, how can she get in the pocket groove without a kit?

We've begun the process of determining what would be appropriate for our little drummer girl. After lengthy discussions with instructors at Allegro and multiple Google searches, we came up with the following tips for providing all budding musicians solid instruments that inspire and support their efforts.

The Konamis: Toad Hole

One is born every minute. I mean a comic lover of course and if that's true then dozens were born this past weekend at Tucson Comic Con. In case your internet went down and you had no other way to connect with the outside world, we had the Con that brings lovers of comics, movies and video games all under one roof. There were over 100 vendors and artists from around the southwest who gathered to meet their fans and sell some awesome one-of-a-kind work. This fourth annual event has become a Tucson staple where nerds keep coming back for more, so much so that over 3,300 attended this two-day event.

Sometimes it can be hard to convince the 20 or 30 somethings of our generation that there is a kind of music that is as important as hip hop, rock, pop, metal or country. Long before Hendrix, McCartney or Cash there was Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Gershwin and others who helped lay the groundwork for what creativity in music and the possibilities of playing instruments would become. We bow to the great classical music icons and proudly give them their own section in our music department. We can only hope that in this digital age their contributions and talents will not be forgotten but revived. Luckily in Phoenix there is a network of people ensuring just that ideal -– Classical Revolution Phoenix.

Healing is an ongoing process for Tucsonans after the Jan. 8, 2011 shooting of Gabrielle Giffords and 18 other people including six who are removed from our community forever. The most powerful part of this process has been seeing so many people unite in mutual respect, consideration and love. We are humbled to have the opportunity to share our love of reading and music to benefit the charities that sprung from the tragedy and benefit its victims.

My brother Nick is in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico celebrating Dia de Los Muertos with his girlfriend, local friends and family who live there. Three Novembers ago when Nick was last in Mexico, he came close to death himself. Nick lived in San Miguel for three years and on this visit he found himself suddenly unable to breathe. Like Flagstaff San Miguel is at about 7000 feet and the elevation forced his cancer diagnosis. His friends rushed him to the hospital where they discovered his lungs were riddled with tumors.
