The Konamis: Spin Cycle

Thanks to the help of the City of Glendale and the Lego Store we got the entire community involved in the ultimate building party at the annual Glitter N' Glow Block Party in historic Downtown Glendale. We invited one and all to join in the fun as we helped host the Lego Fun Zone at one of the Glendale's largest events of the year. Glitter N' Glow closes down streets and opens up tents, kids activities, musical performances, late night businesses and food trucks so that the community has a well-rounded night topped off by the dozens of active hot air balloons tied to the ground.

Did you know that the dragon is the only mythical creature in the Chinese Zodiac? Or that in Chinese astrology the dragon was seen as a powerful almighty king because it was made up of different parts of animals such as a tiger, fish, snake and an eagle. Each year the Chinese Zodiac has a different animal to represent the upcoming year. In 2012 we celebrate the Year of the Dragon beginning Jan. 23. These are a few of the facts we learned while creating our dragon hand puppets at Bookmans Mesa.

Our craft was simple. We colored a simple dragon template, cut it out and glued it to a paper bag along with streamers cut from tissue paper. There were so many different dragons! Each child chose a fun set of colors to represent their dragon's personality.

January Bookmans Treasure Hunt: The Search For Local Business Booty led our @bookmansphoenix followers to Drawn to Comics. Congrats to those Twitter followers who used their noggin to decipher the clues, find the animal oasis and exclaim with joy, “I Love Bookmans!” to the Drawn to Comics staff. Those clever detectives won prize packs that included tickets to see 39 Steps at the Arizona Theater Company, special goods for your pets from Noble Beast, movies from Bookmans and gift cards for Bookmans Own Brand (B.O.B.) merchandise.

Last night I spent all seven hours of sleep battling zombies. The dream started when I saw news on television of the zombie epidemic and progressed to boarding up a sliding glass door, followed by a harrowing trip to the gun store to stock-up on ammo. The drive included plenty of swerving to hit the undead with my Trooper and battling other citizens for shotgun shells. Ah, peaceful sleep.

Some of this may have to do with two recent scores from Bookmans Flagstaff: the movie Zombieland and the book World War Z. Zombieland, with one of my favorite young actors Jesse Eisenberg playing the phobic nerd who is one of the few to survive the apocalypse, moves well between dramatic and laugh-out-loud funny.

The Konamis: Oiled Up

If you know Bookmans then you know we love supporting local organizations, especially local heroes! The Tucson Fire Department was in the house at Bookmans Speedway along with I Heart Heroes.

It's a New Year and a new opportunity to expose yourself to something out of your ordinary. With the help of Classical Revolution, Bookmans Phoenix offered a new kind of sound to our customers and community.

My love of reading goes back as far back as I can remember. Working at Bookmans allows me to indulge in my habit of choice every day of the year. From the first time I read Shakespeare to when I was first entranced by Christopher Moore's Fool, I love discovering new books to love. Book Chat at Bookmans Flagstaff was born from talking about the books Regina and I read each month and trying to get the other to read them too. Book Chat is the last Wednesday evening of every month starting at 5:30 p.m. and all are welcome.
