Bookmans Recommends: Glass Animals

Glass Animals draw their sound inspiration from unique sources. The idea for their album Zaba was inspired by the children’s book The Zabajaba Jungle by William Steig. The band also boasts two EPs: Leaflings, the self-titled Glass Animals and a short album of remixes. The band’s most famous singles include the dreamy “Black Mambo” and “Gooey”.

Beginning as a bedroom project, Glass Animals grew into a group of four after original creator Dave Bayley brought three of his childhood friends on to the team: Drew MacFarland, Edmund Irwin-Singer and Joe Seaward. Based in Oxford, England, the band has toured around the world and participated in major music festivals such as Lollapalooza, Bonaroo and Coachella.

Many soundscapes float into the mind when listening to Glass Animals. To produce these different sounds, band members set up recordings of surrounding nature noises and percussive sounds from cooking utensils and toys. Bayley, who wrote, composed, produced and performed lead vocals for the entire debut album says his lyrics originated from the soundscape of a groove, lyrics that float around a room and end up making it back comfortably in your brain.
