Many of us discovered Lorde when she was just 16 after she released an album that instantly catapulted her into the mainstream music world. Four years later, at the age of 20, Lorde has just released her second album, Melodrama. You can only imagine how immensely Lorde’s life has changed over the past four years. This album is a sneak peak into those changes. Lorde expresses emotions unlike any other. This album reflects on Lorde’s teenage years and entering adulthood. Her songs deal with new experiences, discovering herself, heartbreak, uneasy feelings, self control and the melodrama that comes with growing up. The title of Lorde’s second album says it all. Today, I’m highlighting some of my favorite tracks from Lorde’s Melodrama.

Track 3. Homemade Dynamite

So let’s let things come out of the woodwork
I’ll give you my best side, tell you all my best lines
Seeing me showing someone else love
Dancing with our shoes off
Know I think you’re awesome, right?

This song addresses life amidst the parties. Compared to the rest of this album, this track is as light as a feather drifting through the wind. It’s like that moment when everything feels as if it’s at a positive balance and you’re absorbing it while it lasts. I dig the vibe and rhythm.

Track 10. Liability

Baby really hurt me, crying in the taxi
He don’t wanna know me
Says he made the big mistake of dancing in my storm
Says it was poison

You can feel the self-conscious anxiety on this track. Sometimes in life you have to become comfortable being yourself again. Learning to value who you are and the people who value you is a talent. No worries, Lorde. It’s not the easiest concept to grasp. There is something magnetic about Lorde when she expresses herself at her most vulnerable state. Liability addresses her uneasy somberness contrasted with maturity and insight.

Track 11. Perfect Places

I hate the headlines and the weather
I’m 19 and I’m on fire
But when we’re dancing I’m alright
It’s just another graceless night

This song attempts to escape reality in order to discover perfect places. The life of the young and wild is showcased in this track. We totally get it, we are all just people trying to find perfect places. This is the perfect closing track.

Lorde’s songs are modern classics. Regardless of your taste in music, give this album a listen. You’ll definitely thank me. Be sure to stop by your local Bookmans location and ask an associate for help tracking down Melodrama or any other album that you’re seeking. We look forward to seeing you!
