Bookmans is the largest used book retailer in Arizona. With six retail stores and a 50,000+ square foot warehouse and online store, we have something for everyone. We need your Ruby on Rails skills as we expand the business into the digital realm! We have multiple large projects in the works, so our ideal candidate has a solid knowledge of Rails, and feels comfortable jumping into an existing Rails codebase. There will be plenty of future projects to keep you busy as well as we are a forward-looking company that embraces new technology.

Bookmans hosts the Gangplank Tucson collaborative workspace, where we foster collaboration without physical or financial barriers. Work in an environment where we encourage you to network and reach out to your peers, and share your ideas with others. Participate in frequent events and brown bag presentations to learn something new or just meet people with the same interests as you. Bookmans IT department resides in the Gangplank space, so you must be able to work effectively in a co-working and collaborative space with no cubicles or offices. This is no place for drama or politics – we’re a fun group of people who love what we do!
This is a full-time salaried position with great benefits so you should be willing to relocate to the Tucson Area. Job Description: Software Developer (IT)
Reports to: Director of IT (Corporate Office)
Responsibilities:
• Write code in Ruby on Rails and HTML/CSS
• Work as part of an Agile development team incorporating feedback from senior management and team members
• Design, implement and maintain Ruby on Rails based components
• Developing feeds to data warehouse and marts for web store projects
• Perform software analysis, code analysis, requirements analysis, software review, and software reliability analysis
• Rapidly solve problems and bugs
• Proactively look for ways to improve current applications
• Assist with reviewing and performance tuning of existing corporate databases
Qualifications:
• Demonstrated mastery and fluency in Ruby on Rails
• Experience with a consumer facing web environment
• Experience building, maintaining, and debugging multi-table relational databases (MS SQL and PostgreSQL)
• Expert level and standards-compliant XHTML and CSS skills
• Experience publishing and consuming API Web Services
• Experience with DVCS (We use Git)
• Experience with Agile Project Management (We use Pivotal Tracker)
• Knowledge of professional software engineering practices and best practices for full software development life cycle, including coding
standards, code reviews, source control management, build process, testing and deployment
• Experience with Object Oriented Design and Analysis (OOD and OOA)
• Solid information architecture sensibility
• Ability to communicate complex technical requirements
• Ability to effectively communicate with end users and other non-technical people
• Ability to schedule, prioritize and manage multiple projects
Preferred Skills:
• 5+ years real-world experience developing web applications
• 2+ years experience with Ruby on Rails
• Professional experience in the areas of Affiliate Networks, Amazon, Online Payment Systems, Targeting Algorithms, and Data Mining a huge plus
• Knowledge of Omnis Studio (or willingness to learn) an even bigger plus
• Desire to collaborate with other programmers while working in an open workspace
