Bookmans News

For some of us back-to-school time washes us with warm waves of nostalgia (or crashing waves of miserable memories). Others of us still view back-to-school time as just another annual occurrence. Either way, this Movie Madness Month we want to psych you up for the season by perusing our shelves for our favorite films that take place on campus, in a castle or even during the summer.

Grease (1978)
What happens when a good girl falls in love with a bad boy? There is nothing that screams high school like summer romance. Grease does a fantastic job of capturing the thrill of the first day of school. This musical romance is a must-have in any film lover's collection. Yes, we are in love with the idea of being in love.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)
Coming of age teen comedy more your style? Then look no further than Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Follow the lives of Stacy and Mark as they enter their freshmen year. Who could forget the loveable character Spicoli. "Awesome! Totally awesome! All right, Hamilton!"

Back to School (1986)
We aren't afraid to mention an obvious movie. Back To School starring Rodney Dangerfield follows an adult man as he returns to school while still partying too hard. Kids don't want to go to college? Then go to college with your kids. While such a tactic won't work for everyone, this millionaire businessman provides the laughs that work in films.

Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
For our more modern students there is always Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone. In the first of many films that take place at Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry we follow Harry, Ron and Hermione as they find their place in the wizarding world. Finding out you are a wizard definitely has to be a step up from living under the stairs.

Mean Girls (2004)
If you're a fan of Tina Fey, definitely check out Mean Girls starring Lindsey Lohan. After being home-schooled in Africa for most of her life, main character Cady suffers from a bit of culture shock when she joins a mainstream high school. Did Cady make a big mistake joining the A-List clique The Plastics? Please trust us and don't watch the sequel.

And the list goes on...
We also suggest Billy Madison, Can't Buy Me Love (filmed in Tucson), Never Been Kissed, The Karate Kid (1984) and Bring It On. What better way to relax after a long week of school then with a good film with your friends or family? Tell us your suggestions or call your local Bookmans and we'd be happy to see if we have a copy in stock
