Arizona's publicly funded schools can now apply to win $15,000 of a total $21,000 in cash as Bookmans Entertainment Exchange opens the 2013 Bookmans School Challenge. Last year Bookmans had a great response from public and charter elementary, middle and high schools throughout the state and are looking to make the program more expansive and inclusive by increasing the number of applicants.

Schools described their innovation, creativity and successes in education in 2012 with applications ranging from support for art to science, during the school day and for after school programs. Effective applications establish a need and build on the strengths of the schools.

Becky Daggett, Executive Director for the Flagstaff Leadership Arts and Academy, which made the finals last year, says, "Participating in the Bookmans School Challenge is fun and so different from typical grant applications. As a school that focuses on the visual and performing arts, I love that we got to VISUALLY demonstrate what makes our school special and I love that we were able to get students and staff involved in the process. The Facebook voting really built the excitement and got our parents involved as well. I wish all grant applications were this much fun."

"The 2012 Bookmans School Challenge entries inspired us with their stories. We found ourselves expanding our outreach efforts by engaging with some of the schools that were doing great things, but didn't make our final round," says Sheila Kressler-Crowley, Marketing Director for Bookmans. "Schools who didn't make the top ten or who didn't apply in 2012 should apply this year, because entering the School Challenge helps us develop year-around relationships with schools."

The initial online application process for schools began October 1 and ends on December 3. For more information on deadlines and the submission process schools are encouraged to visit our School Challenge page. The winner of the 2013 Bookmans School Challenge will be announced March 4, 2013.

I wish you would include private school's in your school challenge. Just because the tutiion is not funded by the state, doesn't mean there aren't many school's in need. Reading is just as important in private school as it is in public school. Please consider adding private school's to program.

Thanks!

The School Challenge was born out of a need created by state cuts to educational funding. Since this directly affects public and charter schools, we created the School Challenge specifically for them. As a business we stepped into that gap for our community, which we feel is our responsibility.

Accompanying the cuts were strict, unfunded mandates combined with negative press. These primarily affect publicly-funded schools, so again we focused on those schools because we knew they had good stories to tell about how they were meeting the challenge. We don't know yet where education in Arizona is going to go and it may be that we begin to look at private schools for the School Challenge.

Meanwhile, we do donate both goods and cash to private schools. Private school educators are eligible for Project: Educate. Private school students are eligible for Kids Club, 1317 and Read 10. We appreciate the work of private schools and will continue to support them too.
