Bookmans News

Bookmans and Live Nation want to send you and a friend to see The Jonas Brothers and special guest Jordin Sparks when they bring their big show to the Valley on Tuesday, August 11th!

This week marks the final round of Summer Kids Events at all Bookmans locations. While the end of summer vacation is a bummer, we're going to ease the sting with a Back to School Party at our Tucson and Mesa stores, and the Tony Norris Kids Show in the Flagstaff Café.

If you attended Bookmans' Party in the Park back in 2007, you know that our owner Bob is a big fan of Blues. That's why it was a natural choice for Bookmans to be the sole sponsor of this year's Southern Arizona Blues Heritage Foundation's Blues Challenge. The SABHF Blues Challenge will decide the next local blues band to represent southern Arizona at the National Blues Challenge. The winner of the SABHF Blues Challenge will receive a $2000 travel prize provided by Bookmans to attend the National Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee.

We're celebrating all things cinematic this month with a run of cult n' classic film series at your favorite community theaters, free screenings of movies in our stores, special appearances by the Arizona Ghostbusters, and more!

Practice your Windsor knot: Tie Day returns to Bookmans Speedway on Thursday, August 20th! Employees and customers alike are encouraged to break out the ascots, neckerchiefs, and even the clip-ons. The Speedway store is known for rocking the theme day events and Tie Day gives everyone the chance to shop in style or to just stop by for a debonair dawdle.  We're hoping for more neckties than a Mad Men marathon on AMC (minus all that worry about the London Fog account). We'll have our camera ready, so make sure you wear a smile, too - this fashion shindig lasts all day!

This Friday, August 21st, Bookmans will host two wonderful authors - one a first-time novelist, the other a renowned forester - at our Grant and Flagstaff locations.

Bookmans has long been a supporter of music education in our schools. That's why we are so proud to announce the start of Music in the Classroom, or our MIC program, in Flagstaff. Starting in September, MIC will provide free music education to 400 students in 16 Flagstaff Head Start classrooms.

Today is your last chance to enter the The Southern Arizona Blues Foundation's Blues Challenge! Don't miss your opportunity to perform at Club Congress on Sunday, September 13th and 27th, and your shot at a trip to Memphis for the National Blues Challenge. Please read through the rules and regulations and download an entry form on the competition's official website. Good luck!

Bookmans is excited to take part in the annual HoCo Fest this Labor Day weekend, September 3rd through September 6th. The festival is three days and nights of 40 local and national music acts, a record festival, family activities, and more, all wrapped up in an ecologically friendly package and presented by Hotel Congress.

Bookmans' Reading Challenge 2010 preparation is under way! We're expanding the challenge this year - in more ways than one! This year's competition kicks off on January 6, 2010 and is open to grades K-5 in public and charter elementary schools throughout Tucson, Mesa, Phoenix, and Flagstaff. And a state-wide challenge brings an even bigger prize - the Arizona school with the highest average of number of books read per student will win $15,000!

Support your local non-profit music venue: Become a member of the Rialto Theatre today and Bookmans will throw in a gift certificate - that's in addition to all of the exclusive Rialto membership perks and discounts!

Bookmans is once again a very proud sponsor of this year's Arizona Can't Stop the Serenity film screenings at the Loft Cinema in Tucson on Thursday, September 17th, at 6:30 p.m., and at MADCAP Theaters in Tempe on Saturday, September 19th, at 12:45 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.This year's screenings will be double headers of Joss Whedon's 2005 film Serenity and his internet smash Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, starring Neil Patrick Harris, Felicia Day, and Nathan "Captain Tightpants" Fillion.

The Tucson Weekly has a great Q&A with Jason (not Josh) Calhoon, owner and operator of Cafe Van Go, the red coffee van you can find parked at Bookmans Grant from Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Raves have been spreading about Jason's amazing espresso and we're thrilled he's receiving more widespread recognition in Tucson.
