Who loves our new Mesa cafe?  Well, lots of you do judging by the heavy foot traffic we've seen in our opening weeks.  But also the Phoenix New Times loves us!  Check out all the great things they had to say

Bookmans is an indie superstore. An Arizona institution for over 30 years, we've bought and traded millions of books, dvds, cds, and video games. All day, everyday our buyers look for bestsellers and out of print gems, but sometimes the things we weren't looking for are the most intriguing. Long ago love letters. Forgotten photos. Old scrapbooks. Our new blog is dedicated to those lost items, now found at Bookmans.

The 2010 Bookmans’ Reading Challenge is under way! This is the fourth year of the highly successful contest that was created to encourage literacy among school-age children in Arizona. Since 2007, Bookmans has awarded $30,000 to public and charter elementary schools throughout Arizona, the result of students reading over 665,000 books.

Last year’s winners, Sonoran Science Academy–Broadway in Tucson, Village Vista Elementary School in Phoenix, and The Peak School in Flagstaff, read a combined total of more than 37,000 books during the three-month contest. This year, the Bookmans’ Reading Challenge has been expanded to include all interested public and charter elementary schools in Tucson, Mesa, Phoenix and Flagstaff.

Calling all coffee addicts... a Phoenix coffee crawl will be stopping by our Mesa store tomorrow, Saturday, January 9, at around 5 p.m. PT's Coffee Roasting Co., out of Kansas City, is sending Kasey Klimes, a Midwest Regional Barista Competition finalist, to check out the Arizona coffee scene, and Amuata Coffee will be showing him around. The overpopulation of cats and dogs in America is a growing problem – the Humane Society of the United States estimates that four million cats and dogs are put down in U.S. shelters each year – one every eight seconds. The solution is simple: spay and neuter your pets, and adopt from animal shelters and rescue organizations, rather than breeders. Bookmans is proud to partner with several greyhound rescue and adoption organizations to help find the svelte, sweet companions a new home this Saturday, January 16.

Bookmans Grant will host Tyson Jerry and Cloe Whittaker, founders of the Driven to Sustain project, for a meet-and-greet on Thursday, January 21 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. The Driven to Sustain project is a non-profit project designed to educate people about environmental sustainability and promote global awareness by driving 45,000 kilometers across North America using waste vegetable oil as fuel.

Bookmans is not only good for your pocket, but also good for the planet. We're a long-time supporter of environmental programs and a proponent of electric transportation. Last night, due to the tremendous snows in Flagstaff, the roof of our store and that of JoAnn's Fabrics next door, collapsed. We were closed at the time so there were no injuries. At this time the whole town is shut down and we have no further information. Stay tuned for more updates as they come available. Rest assured we will do everything in our power to get repairs underway and reopened as soon as possible. You can read the breaking news story from the Arizona Daily Sun here.
