This weekend at Bookmans we've got some great Easter-themed events, including an egg hunt, basket craft, and free pictures with that ever-elusive Easter bunny (we convinced him to come in on Saturday, before he gets too busy delivering goodies for Sunday!). Stop in at your nearest Bookmans this Saturday, April 3, for great family-friendly Easter events. Here's the schedule:

All Bookmans locations will be open on Easter Sunday with limited hours, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

This last Saturday evening, Bookmans employees had a great time attending the opening reception for the 8th Annual Recycled Art Exhibiton, featuring art made from recycled materials. Artists from all over Coconino County come together to promote recycling through this creative, fun and inspiring exhibition. It's one of Flagstaff's favorite exhibitions each year! In fact, it seemed like all of Flagstaff was at Saturday night’s opening at the Coconino Center for the Arts. But don’t worry if you didn’t make it Saturday, there’s still a lot to come, including Bookmans in Flagstaff buying and selling on Saturday May 8th. Come see the amazing art, bring your stuff to trade and sell, and even browse for some great new used stuff!

Bookmans needs your used stuff -- and this time, we're not just talking about books, music and movies. We need your recycling! In honor of Earth Month, Bookmans is sponsoring several recycled craft projects. We need your empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls in order to make these crafts successful. Save your recycling and bring it in to any of the below Bookmans locations (you can even do some shopping while you're there) and we'll make recycled creatures out of them!

Arizona's largest film festival is gearing up for its 10th run, starting tomorrow. The 10th annual Phoenix Film Festival begins Thursday, April 8 and runs through Thursday, April 15, 2010.

The festival will be held at the Harkins Scottsdale 101 and the Cine Capri, at 5000 Mayo Blvd., which is one block South of Loop 101 and one block East of Scottsdale Road.

Tucsonans: are you interested in chess but never had the opportunity to learn how to play? Curious about trying out the game but nervous you don’t know the rules? No more excuses!!! Do not miss this amazing opportunity to learn how to play at the 9 Queens 3rd Annual Chess Fest from 3-5 pm on April 10 at the Hotel Congress!

Bookmans is very pleased to announce that the winner of the 2010 Bookmans’ Reading Challenge is Academy Adventures Primary School in Tucson! This school pushed itself to the limit in March to emerge triumphant and the winner of a $15,000 cash prize! At the end of the three-month challenge, the hardworking students at Academy Adventures had read an astounding average of 329 books per student--that’s over 3 books a day! Congratulations to the students and staff at Academy Adventures on a job very well done!

Every day, one of the Flagstaff Bookmans employees goes by the store sight to take pictures of the progress being made there. Lately, the construction workers have started posing for the pictures! So far, the demolition is almost complete, with only the floor to left to be removed. According to one of the workers, the floor removal can be accomplished in two or three days. This means that the rebuilding process should start very soon, and the sooner the building is in place, the sooner Bookmans can get in there and complete our super awesome rebuild of Bookmans 2.0!! See the pictures here, updated daily on our Flickr page.

It’s the fabulous 40th anniversary of Earth Day, and Bookmans is partnering with the City of Flagstaff to make it an awesome celebration this year. We will have tables for kids’ reusable tote bag decorating, have a booth with great giveaways, including special tickets to the Arboretum, and be sponsoring Chuck Cheesman to play his famous kids’ show on the main stage. On top of all that fun, we will also be in the parking lot, all set up and ready to buy your stuff!

Act now! The Tucson Police Department is trying to implement a $3.00 per ticket/item tax on all secondhand dealer and pawn transactions. Per the ordinance, this fee IS PAID BY YOU, upfront at the time of the transaction.

For example, if you sell or pawn an item for $20, you will only receive $17, and the rest will be paid to the City of Tucson.

Tucson secondhand dealers, like Bookmans, and pawn stores, are strongly oppising this type of unfair and discriminatory tax. We encourage you to call your city council member TODAY to express your opposition!

The Arizona Historical Society, as part of their Spring 2010 Saturday Speaker Series, “History in the Headlines”, presents a compelling lecture entitled “The New Deal: CCC in Arizona” on April 17. Robin L Pinto, noted cultural landscape historian, will discuss the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), one of the most significant and successful New Deal work programs – which provided opportunity for thousands of Arizona families.

During the month of April you can join your community in building something that lasts. Our Phoenix and Mesa locations are each hosting a book drive. Our Phoenix location is working with local blogger, Laura of the blog My Dear Trash to host a book drive that will benefit the Friends of the Phoenix Public Library. By donating your used books, dvds, and cds, you are helping our community to build and support the best library system possible.

On Wednesday, April 14, Bookmans Phoenix presents the Showtime documentary "Very Young Girls" starting at 5:30 p.m. This documentary chronicles the journey of several young women through the underground world of exploitation in New York City. Join moderator, Karlie Hustle, for this free and insightful film screening followed by a discussion of the documentary. This film does contain mature themes and viewer discretion is advised.

Beginning May 1st from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce parking lot in downtown Flagstaff, Bookmans will be buying and selling! Expect to see us most Saturdays and Sundays, May through September at the Chamber, on 101 W. Route 66. We will also be buying and selling at all our sponsored festivals, including the Recycled Art Exhibition on May 8, our Video Game Challenge at the Orpheum Theater on May 22, Pride in the Pines on June 12, the Northern Arizona Celtic Festival June 19 and 20, among others. We can’t wait to see you there!

Barbara Unger, award-winning poet and author, will be reading from her latest book of poetry at Bookmans Grant tonight from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. "Impulse Toward Flight" is Unger's latest book of poetry, though the author's work has appeared in The Nation, The Massachusetts Review, The Beloit Poetry Journal and about fifty other poetry journals; and has twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize.

Rutgers University Press has also published a book of non-fiction she co-authored about the NYC borough of The Bronx. "Bronx Accent: A Literary and Pictorial History of The Bronx," which was reviewed in the Sunday Book Review of The New York Times. Unger has twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize in poetry.

Each item that is brought through our doors and placed on a shelf reflects the decision of a single individual to take a stand against unnecessary and harmful waste. Chances are you’ve never thought of shopping for used media in terms of "green," but for more than 30 years our customers have been contributing to the environment by sharing their unwanted books, music, movies, magazines, and games with the Bookmans community.

Come in all month for fun, informative, and free activities that celebrate the planet! Every time you trade in or make a purchase at Bookmans, you’re recycling. This month, we're supporting some wonderful Earth Day events...check them out below!

This last Saturday at Earth Day 2010, Bookmans set-up a few tables and started buying stuff back from all the Flagstaff residents who have been saving it up for us since January 21st, when our store collapsed! We also had tote-bag decorating for kids and a booth with free tee-shirts, reusable tote bags, yoyos and other fun stuff. It was so nice to see customers we have been missing for the last few months, and to reassure everyone that we will indeed be back (better than ever) this fall!

This last Saturday, Bookmans and the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona sponsored a great green event at the Tucson Botanical Gardens -- GreenFest2010! We were proud to welcome all of our wonderful exhibitors and saw more than 800 people at the event throughout the day. All of the people that came out to the event learned about composting, water harvesting, solar power, energy efficient practices, native plants, organic gardening, gardening and much, much more! Rodney and Sahsa Glassman stopped by to read their new book, "Jeremy Jackrabbit Harvests the Rain", to an eager group of listeners; and Mrs. Green interviewed Bookmans' own Bob Oldfather about solar energy, green practices and more.

GreenFest 2010 is right around the corner and we at Bookmans are super excited to share this inaugural event with the Tucson community! We believe it is our responsibility as a company to help care for the planet, and we are always working to reduce our carbon footprint and help build a better, greener community. This year we are thrilled to partner with the Tucson Botanical Gardens and the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona to present this new festival that highlights simple, cost effective ideas and strategies that everyone can easily incorporate into their lives!

As you may have already heard, Bookmans in Flagstaff is going to be out in the community, buying and selling, every Saturday and Sunday, all-day, all summer! See here for schedule details. Most weekends, we will be in the Chamber of Commerce parking lot on Route 66 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and on our first day at the Chamber of Commerce, May 1, it will be a party, complete with live music, snacks and drinks, face-painting, balloon sculpting and more!

Join us tomorrow, Wednesday April 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Bookmans Phoenix, for a free screening and discussion of "Out in the Silence," a documentary that is a campaign for fairness and equality in rural and small-town America. Following the story of a small town confronting a firestorm of controversy ignited by a same-sex wedding announcement in the local newspaper, this gripping documentary will challenge you to rethink your values and help close the gaps that divide our communities. Sponsored by the ACLU of Arizona, the evening will also feature a special guest musical performance by Namoli Brennet.

As many of you have already heard, Bookmans in Flagstaff is buying and selling beginning this Saturday and Sunday from 10am-4pm in the Chamber of Commerce parking lot. Below is a map of how this drop-off drive-through will work. Bookmans will have a 20x20 booth, and will have folks available to direct traffic through the Chamber of Commerce parking lot. If you drive in with your stuff ready to be unloaded, our folks will come to you and unload your vehicle, then you can pull through and park in one of the nearby city parking lots. We expect it to be as easy as pie. However, if the weather is uncooperative, we will have to cancel our event. Stay tuned to the website, Twitter, or Facebook for updates, and we hope to see you there!

Beautiful weather is ahead this weekend, so come enjoy Tucson’s glorious spring and continue the Earth Day celebrations into May by learning how you can live the green life from the inside out!

This weekend is the first in a series of new “Viva La Vida Verde” green living events being held by the Tucson Clean Cities Coalition/Solar Partnership program, Doucette Homes, the Habistore, and Mrs. Green Goes Mainstream. Join us this Saturday, May 1 from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Doucette Homes Orchards community in Civano on Tucson’s southeast side.

There will be over 20 eco-friendly vendors on-hand to display their products and services; everything from solar to green pest control, green landscaping, water harvesting, green plumbing and, of course, alternative fuels!

Although it may be just a little nippy out tomorrow, it appears that the weather is likely to cooperate for Flagstaff Bookmans first buy and sell at the Chamber of Commerce parking lot from 10am to 4pm. The wind should be calm, and the chance of precipitation is low, so unless the weather takes a dramatic turn for the worse, we’ll be out there, selling great used merchandise, and buying your stuff!
