At Bookmans, we always welcome friendly pets on leashes in our stores. During the month of July, we're celebrating the Dog Days of Summer (and the other pets, too) with tons of pet-centric events. Check out our events calendar for more information.
Bookmans Flagstaff is having an absolute blast at our free summer kids events at the Orpheum Theater every Wednesday morning at 10am. Last week, we had over 100 people for Micheal Steele's Magic Show, and we expect even more this Wednesday June 30th for Chuck Cheesman's famous kids show! We always provide free juice and healthy snacks to help keep the little ones happy. Chuck will be playing his “Dancing With No Shoes On” set, perfect for kids about one to six years old. Chuck, our MIC program instructor, has an amazing gift for keeping small children riveted for unprecedented periods of time. Plus, watching the little ones dance and sing is always super cute, and makes for great pictures! See here for images of our last event.

Happy Social Media Day! The social media industry analyst and giant Mashable declared that today should be Social Media Day all across the world. So, what's up with Social Media Day? Well, read up from the source itself, Mashable:
Today we acknowledge and celebrate the revolution of media becoming social. A day that honors the technological and societal advancements that have allowed us to have a dialogue, to connect and to engage not only the creators of media, but perhaps more importantly, one another.
Bookmans in Flagstaff will be back out this Saturday, June 26th from 10am to 4pm, in the Chamber of Commerce parking lot. We'll have a great selection of popular fiction and nonfiction books, kids books, CDs, DVDs, and video games available for sale, and we take all forms of payment. We'll also be ready and willing to buy your stuff, and are happy to help unload your vehicle. Please pull through to the far end of the parking lot and we'll set you up with a deal, just the way we do in our stores.

Marshall- "My guilty music pleasure is Gucci Mane. Ringtone Rap."
Denise- "If I had music I felt guilty about liking, why would I want the Bookmans website to post it?"
Cas- "John 5, because he was in K.D. Lang's band, Lita Ford's band and Marilyn Manson. Hah!"
While the official count has not been announced, early numbers rumor that more than 10,000 people attended the Phoenix Comicon this Memorial Day Weekend. With the fantastic move to the Phoenix Convention Center, the convention had over three times the space than previous years. Bookmans was spinning the prize wheel with a line wrapped around the corner all weekend long. Many walked away with our exlusive Bookmans Phoenix Comicon 2010 t-shirt, while others received a “dramatic reading” from the programming guide on Saturday, a hi-five, or even some custom-drawn comics from Bookmans own Tavis Maiden, creator of The Konamis. No matter what was won, everyone had a great time!

Did you miss Phoenix Comicon 2010, or do you just want to relive the amazing experience? Here is a quick HD recap, fully loaded with the sights, scenes and people that attended, like Wil Wheaton, James Marsters, Felicia Day, Levar Burton, John Schneider, Lou Ferrigno, Jonathan Frakes and more. Check it out!
A special shout out to the band Minibosses, for their awesome track. Check out their music and tour dates at www.minibosses.com

Bookmans presents Geek Prom at the Phoenix Comicon -- just as the sun set and you thought Phoenix Comicon 2010 was over, the geeks came out to party! Hosted at the Hyatt Regency, special guests Felicia Day (The Guild) and Wil Wheaton (Star Trek-The Next Generation) joined us to hang out and crown our geek king and queen. Everyone rocked out to the sounds of No Big Deal and Brain Cage! It was an amazing geeked-out event. All the proceeds went to Kids Need To Read, a foundation that works to create a culture of reading for children by providing inspiring books to under-funded schools, libraries, and literacy programs in the U.S. Special thanks to the celeb guests, bands and everyone that helped to make this an awesome event!

Come check out Daniel Edlen's Vinyl Art at our Mesa store. We'll be hosting a display of his artwork during our Mesa Cafe Media Night on Tuesday, June 15, at 6:00 p.m. Ear Candy Charity will also be showcasing the music of Casey Lee Smith. Daniel, originally from Pacific Palisades, now lives in Gilbert with his wife, four dogs and a new little girl. He paints Vinyl Art, portraits of musicians and entertainers on vinyl records made by the subject. Instead of Elvis on velvet, think Elvis on an Elvis record. He also does Liter(art)ure, drawings of authors in their books.

We asked Daniel 10 questions... check them out below:
1. What inspired you to do this type of artwork? Where did you get the idea?
I had gotten into music as a teenager, as well as taken a bunch of art classes. When I got duplicate beat-up copies of albums I loved, I tried painting on them. The idea initially came from a white pencil drawing on black paper.
Unhappy White Girls is a graphic novel project making a difference, and addressing real-world issues — or it can be, if the Kickstarter project gets the support it needs by the June 15 deadline. Unhappy White Girls is the story of Tish and Branna, two teenage girls from Nowhere, New Mexico, coming to terms with their own secrets throughout the course of one turbulent day.

The graphic novel was created by Christian Beranek, of Disney's Kingdom Comics, and co-creator of Dracula vs. King Arthur, who then recruited illustrators Triska Tsang and Vivian Lee from Brooklyn, NY, to provide the art and bring the characters to life. "Triska and Vivian really understand how to convey emotion via the page," he says. "From the slightest glance to frustration and tears, they capture the teenage condition."
But Unhappy White Girls isn’t just another graphic novel — it has a greater purpose to raise awareness about teen pregnancy and LGBTQ issues. If the project meets its $6,000 goal by June 15, Christian and his team will complete production on the novella, with all remaining funds and proceeds being used to promote awareness regarding these social concerns.
