“I am suuuuper stoked 'cause I just collected the photos for the day and we have 161! Blammo!” says Travis at Bookmans Grant, the winning store in our FaceBookmans 5000 competition. Thanks to you, Bookmans Grant employees will enjoy pizza from Fresco, a local pizzeria.

To celebrate busting through the 5000 “like” mark on Facebook, we decided to give back to our FaceBookmans 5000 by offering a one-time 15% discount on all purchases from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, October 24. Over 280 people who took advantage of the discount also participated in our store competition by having their photo taken with an “I like Bookmans on Facebook!” thumbs up.
This November Bookmans gives thanks. We are thankful for you, for your hard work and volunteerism, for the beautiful landscape of our home here in Arizona, for our four-legged (and feathered and scaly) friends, and for our freedom to express ourselves however we wish. Our own Harrison, of Bookmans Does Book Dominoes video fame, has put together a video collage of many of our experiences with you. While all our stores are included, the video isn't exhaustive of our outreach. It is a reminder that we are not just a store, but a members of the community. We are proud and humbled by your good work and generosity that allows us to be involved as well.
Thank you!
We pretty much live in a state of adoration around Bookmans. We love cult classics, we love local venues like The Loft Cinema, and we love all you Plastics. By now dedicated Bookmans.com readers all know about Ticket Tuesdays, designed to show our love.
In case you were wondering, screen mesh on your fly swatter is the way to go. This according to Peter Taylor who recently celebrated his 25th year with Bookmans Entertainment Exchange and whose experience and insight has guided many Bookmans employees.
“Peter told me to pass on first novels at the buying counter, unless the second novel is a best seller,” says Katy Ransom, Director of Store Operations. “Of course he was right, they just don't sell. And he's right 99% of the time.”
“Peter is amazing. He has loyally contributed to the company while increasing the caliber of the buying counter the entire time he's been here,” says Kaia Pfaffl, Store Manager at Bookmans Speedway and Peter's former manager. “He trained all the buyers and in so doing created one of the best book departments anywhere.” Kaia continues, “Peter will tell you things straight, and he's innovative. His contribution to our online sales is major.”
People have come to rely on Peter, not just in the daily work of the store, but in their personal lives. Peter was presented with a certificate and a small bonus at a party in his honor at his home store, Bookmans Grant. Immediately afterwards, coworkers jokingly asked him for a loan. It's these same coworkers to whom Peter attributes his longevity with Bookmans. He says, “The 25 years I've been here speaks for itself. The employees are my family and the staff keeps me young.”

Thank you, Peter, for your professionalism and constant service that has served as an inspiration to the entire company and that has raised the caliber of our operations.

Sometimes an idea takes form in the hands of individuals and evolves through community efforts into something great. These grassroots movements are often more stable than top-down promoted events. Ignite Phoenix, a performance series where 18 people make five minute presentations about their passion, is one such movement and it has spawned an all new evening for adults only. Ignite Phoenix After Hours takes on the same format as Ignite, only it's billed as an edgier forum. “After Hours is that kid in junior high your parents told you not to hang with, only now, you’re an adult. You can hang with whoever you want,” according to the After Hours website with the request that you submit a presentation proposal today.

Today we honor ten years of service on the part of Steve Paschall. Every one of those years was spent in the Bookmans warehouse where he has been the "backbone of the warehouse and essential in distributing acquisitions to the stores," according to Wharehouse and Online Sales Manager Aaron Thornburg.
Steve's wife of 25 years, Gayle joined Bookmans employees in a celebration with food from Mosaic Cafe and Gayle's own brownies made from a secret family recipe forged through the ages (and posted on the refrigerator of the break room afterwards). After the feast, Steve was presented a plaque and a bonus check, which he dutifully handed over to Gayle.

"I appreciate Bookmans buying a brand new warehouse for my anniversary. I hope to have as much fun in the next ten years as I have in the past ten years," says Steve. Bookmans will be lucky indeed to get another ten years of his employ not just because of his contributions to the company, but also because we enjoy hearing tales of his colorful and action-packed life experiences.
Thank you Steve, for your hard work, reliability, and story telling.
Bookmans Flagstaff is on the cusp of reopening, and we are ready to start the new era! This last summer marked our twentieth year in Flagstaff, and so, despite all the losses and set-backs, it seems auspicious that we will be rejoining the Northern AZ community in our bright new form. When a few of us walked into the store day before yesterday, we couldn't help but “ooo” and “aaa” at the beautiful space. All the cafe walls are windows, filling the front of the store with natural light. The new trade counter area, where all buying and selling will occur, is open and easy to navigate.

The arts are alive and well in Tucson and we are packing our calendar with movies, metal and music. Among the events we plan to attend are The Loft Film Fest, Cosmo's Moon Open House and an intimate concert featuring local musicians playing Vivaldi.
Drivers by on Speedway have no doubt noticed by now the tents set up in the parking lot of The Loft Cinema as they gear up for their first film festival. The Loft Film Fest is an eight-day celebration of film that began yesterday and will run through November 18, complete with guest appearances by filmmakers and personalities including Larry McMurtry, Diana Osanna, Chris Eyre, Alex Cox, Carlos Reygades. Rosanna Arquette and Griffin Dunne were in attendance for Thursday night's opening film, Martin Scorsese's After Hours.

Bookmans supports free espression of ideas and we like to have authors visit our stores to discuss theirs. Our firm support of authors, famous or less well known, and from all genres and publishers, through author signings allows you, our patrons, a chance to get up close and personal with these literary artists all year around. In the coming weeks Bookmans Grant in Tucson will host authors of health and wellness, a love story, and Christian science fiction. This literary buffet will leave you full and clamoring for more.
Arlene Weintraub will be signing and discussing her new book from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 20 at Bookmans Grant location. She will be showcasing her book Selling the Fountain of Youth, about the anti-aging industry. This freelance writer has been published in USA Today, US News and World Report, and Technology Review. Come down talk with Arlene about her experience in the health industry and her exploratory thoughts on the youth seeking industry.

As Local First Arizona supporters, we'd like to raise the profile of local businesses while rewarding people for shopping locally. To this end, we've created Bookmans On the Hunt specifically designed for all you street savvy, Twittering gumshoes who want to learn more about the services and goods provided in your community. We will be stashing goodies at local businesses and providing clues via Twitter to lead you to the booty. Your mission will be to hit the pavement to locate the prize while seeing parts of the city you may not have seen before.
Send out the hounds! This week we are giving away four pairs of tickets to the Tucson Roller Derby. Listen up rookies, if you bring canned food items to the bout you will be rewarded with a free raffle ticket. My informant tells me that this first business is also providing coupons to the lucky winners. Are you adding up this package? A pair of Tucson Roller Derby tickets, a raffle ticket for an additional prize, AND coupons to the local business. And it ain't even Christmas yet!

Clear your calendar to check out the fast lane ladies of the Tucson Roller Derby!
What do you get when you mix helmets, fishnet stockings and femme fatals? The Tucson Roller Derby, you dunce! This babelicious bout will be at 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 20 at the Tucson Convention Center. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door, and don't forget to purchase their commemorative button. Bookmans is proud to sponsor these hot mamas, so stop by and watch the beat down while supporting our local ladies. Just remember these hot mamas don't mess around, but as always these bouts are family friendly.

This November Bookmans has focused on giving back to the community with support from our customers. Without you, we would be unable to host free in-store events, build libraries, donate books or host vendor booths at various community events, which we hope everyone enjoys as much as we do.

This Saturday, November 20, join us at Bookmans Phoenix for our annual Customer Appreciation Day. We appreciate you every single day, but we have plans to celebrate your support in one fun-filled afternoon starting at noon. We start our free-for-all with a craft project to celebrate the season for our young shoppers. Then anyone take advantage of free therapeutic chair massages from our local friends at Massage Makers. Of course we'll have our favorite expression of joy, free pizza to take the edge off holiday jitters. Please visit our events calendar for specific times, each event is on a first come, first served basis.
Our Mesa location hasn't forgotten about their customers! Each employee has been given a gift card to pass on their appreciation to their customers who have shown the spirit of the season. Please leave a comment to let us know how you enjoyed the day or how you spent your gift card if you were one of those lucky winners!

We pretty much live in a state of adoration around Bookmans. We love cult classics, we love local venues like The Loft Cinema, and we love Turkey Day. By now dedicated Bookmans.com readers all know about Ticket Tuesdays, designed to ensure a yummy Thanksgiving (Yes, I know that makes no sense, but The Loft has some yummy victuals in their snack bar).
After a day full of family, friends, football and food the excitement of the holiday shopping season creeps upon us. The day after Thanksgiving, also known as Black Friday is the busiest shopping day of the year. Insanity at malls, waking up at 3 a.m. to stand in line and the official start to shopping madness are three unnecessary trials of the season!
Don't fret. Bookmans offers ways to express your insanity in addition to experiencing the insanity of others.

We wish the extended Bookmans family (that's you) a happy Thanksgiving! We are taking the day off and hope you will too. All Bookmans locations will be closed for the holiday.
This turkey was brought to you by Hudlow Elementary School in Tucson.
Our stores will resume regular store hours, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., on Black Friday. Meanwhile, we are going to loosen our belts for the feast. What are your plans?
Bookmans Speedway Manager Kaia Pfaffl has turned 15 Bookmans years old! Kaia, a mother of two and wife of Aaron Thornburg who works in Bookmans Warehouse, has made Bookmans a family affair having worked at all Bookmans Tucson locations.
As we resume normal business hours for Black Friday we ask, what are your plans for Saturday? Might we suggest you participate in Small Business Saturday? What is Small Business Saturday all about? To help you with these questions, we've put together a carnival of Small Business Saturday, starting with NBC's Today Show where American Express CEO Ken Chenault discusses the thinking behind the movement.
Cyber Monday articles are all the rage today across the internetowebosphere and Bookmans would like for you to feel comfortable participating in the mania by shopping in the comfort of your pajamas -- or uniform or business casual attire or whatever. Suits are probably too busy with their high powered meetings to shop, but I'm sure their assistants are all over it. Does your boss know you're shopping?
The thing is that we still hope that you will shop with independently-owned, local businesses. Not only are you benefitting your local economy, but having your stuff travel a shorter distance is better for the planet. To start, check out Local First Arizona's directory for a full range of goods and services offered here in Arizona.

By now you know, we love cult classics, we love local venues like The Loft Cinema, and we love that you had so much patience the last two weeks when the website went wonky. To make up for that we're having TWO Ticket Tuesday today (watch for another post soon).
It's not just love cult classics we love. We are also enamored with roller derby. As we mentioned previously, we love that you had such patience the last two weeks when the website went wonky. To make up for that, we're having TWO Ticket Tuesday today where we distribute Tommy Boy tickets AND Tucson Roller Derby tickets.
