Everyone strutted around in his or her best costume at the Phoenix Comicon. One of the many Arizona-based costume groups who make appearances for charity work is the Arizona Avengers, who recently celebrated their second anniversary. They are an exclusive costuming group with their characters based in the Marvel Universe. With the recent hit-film The Avengers breaking box-office records, it is obvious that members of The Arizona Avengers are enjoying this success. They hosted a panel called "Anyone Can Be A Superhero" at the convention where we learned how to create costumes on a budget.

Astrology is a major influence in many people's lives. Reading the stars for clues about a person's personality, future or fortune has been a practice for thousands of years. It can take years of studying and practice to be able to read the signs correctly, so how does one go about learning the practice of astrology? We talked to Jewell Starsinger, an astrologer who has practiced the art for over 20 years. She uses intricate charts to read the signs for a thorough understanding of one's astrological map. She gave me some insight on her craft, and how it can affect a person's every day life.

See, we know that a lot of adults read teen fiction (young adult or YA). And we think that even more adults should read YA. The problem is that a lot of our peers snicker and look down their nose at us when we talk about a book we've read that was meant for teens. My grandma gives me the look when she thinks I could be doing something better with my time. My coworkers used to give me the look when I snuck my Meg Cabot book out during my lunch break. My doctors give me the look every time they check out the cover of the book I'm reading when they finally walk into the exam room. Sometimes the look is paired with the eye roll and the insinuation that I'm so immature. Sometimes it's paired with the dismissive smirk. And sometimes it's followed-up with the even more severe you-are-such-an-idiot look. Know the look? Young At ♥ is a book club for you.

The Arizona Derby Dames return to the Coliseum to fight for the championship win on Saturday, June 23. Teams competed throughout the season for top stats rankings and the chance to move directly into the championship game by ending the season in first place. For the third year in a row the Coffin Draggers take on the challengers, going head-to-head with the Bombshells for the 2012 season. In addition to the main event the Dames host a bout between the men's leagues: the Phoenix Rattleskates versus the San Diego Aftershocks. Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum is located at 1826 W. McDowell Rd. in Phoenix. Doors open at 5 p.m. with bouts starting at 7 p.m.

It's his birthday! Not a celebration of the day he was born, but rather the day he became part of the Bookmans family. Five lucky years ago, Joe Gonzalez joined our ranks and has greatly contributed to making our electronics department what it is today. He's seen some crazy stuff (mostly caused by him), kept us updated on the strange and unusual and never fails to be a team player. We love our Joe (formerly Joe2) and hope that you've had or will get the pleasure of chatting with him one day in the Donkey Kong corner of our store.

Hop out of the pool and leave your inner tube behind for the adventure if you'd like for the Phoenix Edition of Bookmans Treasure Hunt: The Search for Local Business Booty. In April we hid the treasure at our favorite T-shirt print shop BrandX on Mill Ave., but where could it be hidden this month?

It's June. At Bookmans that means music, oh yeah! The Dusty Buskers are a trio of local music makers making, as a fan put it, "a crowd-pleasin', string-teasin', nipple-squeezin' good time." Old-timey/Celtic Revival and Nontraditional Traditional Music, the Dusty Buskers are made of Uncle Fiddlin' Phoenix (vocals, fiddle, moustache), Dusty Squirrelfisher (vocals, harmonica, guitar, mandolin, sideburns) and Reverend Rudy Cortese (banjo, lightwork). They formed in 2006 and have been going strong ever since. They will grace Bookmans Speedway with their sweet sounds once again at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 16.

Get out to support the businesses that honor a three dimensional book as much as you do. While we're still waiting for our hover crafts, digital readers are already here. We love e-books because we love all books, but we're sorry to see the drop in interest in print. The most memorable books of our childhood were not on an e-reader, but slowly and privately revealed themselves to us. Books that we couldn't do a quick search of but had to re-read to find that one spot to experience again. Page by page the touch and smell bring us back to a time less driven by technology (nostalgia is not overrated).

Put down your chalk and shine your apples teachers because Fair for Educators is here. The fair is from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19 in the Sunnyside High School gymnasium. This seven year running event has been put on by the Office of the Pima County Superintendent and showcases the resources of over 100 businesses, local organizations and non-profits. The event is open to classroom teachers, administrators, counselors, librarians, para professionals, after school providers and home schoolers and free as long as you register.

Like many of you who write to us asking for a Bookmans in your neighborhood, Meg Tred lives far enough away that a trip to Bookmans is an event for her family. A photographer, mixed media artist and NaNoWriMo novelist, Meg will drop us a note to say she's packed her daughters, husband and a sack of marshmallows in the car for a roadtrip our way.

Every day when Tavis (T.J.) Maiden wakes up, he eats his bacon, drinks his coffee and draws comics. Not only is T.J. the most awesome Assistant Manager at Bookmans Mesa and celebrating ten years with us, he is an all-around talented dude. Those amazing web-comics you see pop up in our blogs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, "The Konamis", yes, those are his. Inspired by every day life experiences as a dad, T.J. also created the humorous web-comic Stranger Danger. When we ask T.J. what his three favorite things were, he finds it difficult to list just three. We did learn that his top three are old-school cartooning, playing music and creativity.

Featured Book Review: Queen of the Conqueror: The Life of Matilda, Wife of William I by Tracy Borman
William the Conqueror was a giant of his time at five feet ten inches while his wife Matilda towered by his side at four feet two inches. We Bookmans types hoard this sort of information and from now on when tall/small couples come into the store we will think of William and Matilda. Queen of the Conqueror: The Life of Matilda, Wife of William I by Tracy Borman has a surprising amount of information about Matilda considering how history has historically treated women.

Imagine being a music fanatic and sifting through towers of CDs and vinyl all day long. Or imagine yourself on a mission in a Bookmans and passing the forest that is our music section with hundreds of rows of artists and bands calling your name and screaming "Pick me! Pick me!" It's a rough job and we get to do it.

It's Music Month in these parts so we chased a few of our staff members at Bookmans Phoenix around while they shelved and asked what their summer music lists consist of. Here's what they say:
Lather on the sunscreen because this one's going to be a scorcher. For this month's treasure hunt we include a super sceret prize for those die hard fans who succeed at winning the prize packages. Slap on a hat and a smile and get ready for treasure hunting Lara Croft style. Just kidding there will be no robots or digging.

Celebrating music month with local music makers Finding Solace! "We hope to use our music as a tool to find ourselves, and be at peace with what this world gives us," says the band who aims for honesty in their music. Join us from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 30 at Bookmans Speedway as we welcome Finding Solace!

Influenced by such sounds as Taking Back Sunday, Danger Radio, A Day to Remember and We are the Ocean, Finding Solace has translated their experiences in life through their instruments into a sound all their own. The band is made up of Shay Ramirez on acoustic guitar and Vocals, Haley Roughton on acoustic guitar and vocals and Zac Harris playing bass, synth and piano.
The Beach Boys, one of the world's most legendary and influential bands, reunited for a global 50th Anniversary Tour. Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks tour together for the first time in more than two decades and will perform at the Grand Canyon University Arena on Saturday, July 7. One lucky Ticket Tuesday winner will receive a pair of tickets to see the show.

Bookmans is the largest used book retailer in Arizona. With six retail stores, a 50,000+ square foot fulfillment center and online store, we have something for everyone. Celebrating Social Media Day means you pocket your phones for some face-to-face interaction with other social media masters for drinks and fun from 6 to 8 p.m. this Saturday, June 30 in the AZUL Lounge at the Westin La Paloma Resort and Spa. This networking event will unite Tucson Tweeps, Facebook fanatics, Pinterest pals, Linked-in connectors, and Google+ junkies in one room to get their status on. No seriously, there will be a projection of the live streaming Twitter feed.

Demolition has begun to create the new Bookmans Recreation Exchange in the 13,548 square foot former Walgreens store located at 3330 E. Speedway in the Rancho Center in Tucson. In February of this year we signed a lease to open a sports, outdoor and recreation exchange store using the same quality buy, sell and trade business model that has proved successful for over 35 years. The space will accommodate a huge variety of sporting and recreation goods.
