All Bookmans locations will have special holiday hours in recognition of Independence Day. We will open at 11 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. - just in time for fireworks. We will resume normal hours Tuesday, July 5 (9 a.m. to 10 p.m. in case you forgot).
Some Independence activities you might want to try (modified from Mr. Donn):
Join us this July as we celebrate the Dog Days of Summer with pet adoptions, educational events and caricatures. We call it Dog Days, but we celebrate all animals (both pets and the wild things). We love your cats, rats, bats -- even your pterosaurs. Learn about bears at Bookmans Flagstaff, sit for a photo with your pet at Bookmans Grant or have fun with your pets all day at Bookmans Mesa.
According to The Literature Network, The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896) by H.G. Wells, deals with themes of eugenics, the ethics of scientific experimentation, Darwin's theories and religion. But it's summer and who cares about vivisecting literature? We care about enjoying a good book, so we're providing our own guide to The Island of Doctor Moreau.
Phoenix's newest horror host Dr. Diabolic debuts a new variety show at 7 p.m. on July 6 during First Friday in the Phoenix Art Museum's Whiteman Hall and you, the fans of Ticket Tuesday, have first dibs! The show features live improvisational and sketch comedy, geek debates and outrageous movie clips. While museum admission is complementary, tickets to the variety show are $10 and will be available at the entrance to Whiteman Hall. All ages are welcome!

The show is emceed by Dr. Diabolic and Nurse Narcotica who are also the audience's hosts-with-the-most through an evening of performances by locals which include:
For most of us it feels as though summer is just starting, but for Arizona educators they are in the middle of back-to-school preparations. Each year an educator spends an average of $700 of their own money to help students with supplies and classroom needs. We hope that if you are an educator you are taking advantage of the Bookmans Project: Educate program, but we want to share with you a non-profit organization that will assist you even further.

A documentary based on the economic crisis of our times- big business and America's wealthiest versus the common man and working wages. The growing pressure of tax relief policies on the super rich and the questionable retirement of the middle class are catalyzing the impending implosion of the U.S. economy in the film "HEIST: Who Stole The American Dream" directed and produced by Frances Causey. Come see the film and discuss the importance of buying local with the nationally renowned organization Local First Arizona at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11 at The Loft Cinema. Take the chance to come and meet Kimber Lanning, from our very own LFA and expert in the film, as well as Frances Causey and Business, Civic and Environmental Leader Nan Walden.
Every animal deserves a loving home. We should preserve the habitats of the wild ones and create safe, comfortable homes for the domestic ones. Each of our stores hosts pet adoptions throughout the year and this month we've seen an uptick in adoptions. We are so pleased that you are expanding your family and opening your homes to new pets.

The Animal Match Rescue Team, Inc. website points out that, "Most dogs in shelters and rescues have been there anywhere from a few days to several months. So even though when adopted they are going to a home with love and care devoted to them alone, they might have some difficulty understanding why they have 'lost' another home."
It's not a decision to take lightly and some preparation will allow for a more successful integration of your new family member. "The first few days in your home are special and critical for a pet. Your new dog will be confused about where he is and what to expect from you. Setting up some clear structure with your family for your dog will be paramount in making as smooth a transition as possible," writes Sara Lippincott, on the Petfinder website.
We've combined advice from Lippincott's Tips for the First 30 Days of Dog Adoption with Animal Match Rescue Team, Inc's Tips on Adopting a Dog -- A guide to the First Few Weeks to help those of you who come to our in-store pet adoptions be prepared for your new dog.
Anthony, Greg, Jeff and Murray announced that 2012 would be their final year touring together and unveiled exciting plans for the future of the world famous children's entertainment group. Two lucky Ticket Tuesday families will win tickets for four to see The Wiggles at Comerica Theater at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24.

Our urban desert environment is not welcoming to lost pets or strays. The scorching-hot pavement, record-breaking temperatures and a consistent drought make it hard for the toughest cat or dog to live on the streets. We’ve seen strays roaming our neighborhoods and daily commutes and we wonder how to help. Thankfully, Phoenix provides many easily accessible resources to help animals in need but it's our duty to take the first steps for them. These critters can't dial a phone or ask for help, so be a pet pal and lend a hand when you can.
Loyal customers who met in our store tied the knot on July 7, 2012 at Bookmans Mesa. We are honored to be part of their story. The Bookmans family wishes Daphne and Andrew a lifetime of happiness and dragon slaying.
During the Dog Days of summer we celebrate all species and we welcome any well-behaved pet on a leash in our stores (actually, we do that all year around). One of our favorite pets is Aeris Starfire Pfeil, a gorgeous marmalade tabby who visits Bookmans and Target in her buggy.

"Aeris is a very unique little girl," says Aeris's person, Krista Rikkertsen. Not many felines enjoy a ride in the car!
Soar on your Firebolt 3000 to a magical place conjured from thin air in downtown Tucson to celebrate the arrival of Harry and the Potters. Join the pioneers of wizard rock for an enchanting evening filled with sorcerously good fun. Apparate to the all-ages event from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 19 at Hotel Congress, 311 E. Congress St. Dress in your best wizard robes to the concert that even "You Know Who" wouldn't miss. Hogwarts students don't have to be third-years to visit our Hogsmeade, which will sell butter beer and wizard wares and doling out divinations.

Having little regard for mothers (or people in general) and the knowledge that Merrill Markoe is the former head writer and romantic partner of David Letterman will help readers enjoy her collection of memoirist essays in Cool, Calm & Contentious. We picked up the book for the stories about her dogs. Those deliver and so do most of the vignettes.
In "Why I Love Dogs" Markoe explicates all the boorish behaviors of her dogs (laying on her work, standing in front of the television, pulling napkins from the trash) and how we wouldn't put up with that crap from any other roommate or guest. Yet we endure all this and more from our dogs. Markoe shares at first her attraction to and then her leeriness of "The Dog Whisperer" in her essay "The Dog Prattler". By the end of this essay she recognizes and embraces her dogs' excitement for everything they encounter in life. "Selfishness 101 (for Dogs)" and "Jimmy Explains His Wake-up Techniques" bring us even closer to her dogs and their charming personalities.
We adore our pets more than most things in life. From the never-ending game of fetch to that feeling when you give them a huge hug after an out-of-town trip, they are a buddy like no other. We'll be celebrating that time-honored bond with our pooches this Saturday at Doggy-Palooza from noon to 1 p.m. at Bookmans Phoenix.
During July Bookmans celebrates the Dog Days of Summer and so far, here at Bookmans Speedway, we have had some amazing events. We have fantastic animal welfare partners whose compassion for these pets is inexhaustable. We are overjoyed by the number of adoptions we've seen this month and we look forward to meeting more animals and animal lovers. Please read our success stories and join us for our upcoming events.

Normally we don't post recaps in our news feed (See that blog tap up there ☝? That's where we typically post recaps.), but the Harry and the Potters concert/party at Club Congress was so spectacular we can't help ourselves. Plus we have news. The wizard rockers apparated to Ye Olde Bookmans Shoppe to sign a guitar for us to bestow on one of the attendees. Also, we know you want to see the photos of our Azkaban prisoners.

With a little bit of magic, we grabbed this image of one of our helpers whom we caught taking candy from Ye Olde Bookmans Shoppe.
Slather on the sunscreen and head outside for the July edition of Bookmans Phoenix Treasure Hunt: The Search for Local Business Booty. In June we hid the loot at the extraordinary Papa Ed's Ice Cream in historic Downtown Glendale, but where could we have hid it this time?

The monsoons are approaching fast so hurry to collect your prize package before you get soaked. This month we're doling out a prizes worth $75 but as always there is work involved. Be aware that only an adventurous attitude and local know how will land you this grand treasure.

Each year The Loft Cinema hosts a film festival devoted to all the little munchkins of Tucson. The eight-day festival features film sing-a-longs, animated features and books related to the big screen. The return of the festival marks the sixth year The Loft has devoted over a week's-worth of films for parents and kids along with fun activities, free popcorn and (we almost forgot to mention) free admission. Can you believe it? A way to keep cool and spend some time with the kids and it's free. What a bargain!
The Arizona Museum of Natural History (AzMNH) is celebrating 35 years of bringing premier exhibits and education to Arizona. We applaud their dedication to inspiring our community through a fun approach in teaching us about the natural and cultural history of the southwest. What better way to share with you, our Ticket Tuesday fans, than giving away family packs of tickets for you to enjoy the museum? Each family pack contains four tickets.

If we can't go to the beach in Arizona, we'll bring the beach to you! Grab your pooch and join us for Beach Blanket Bow-Wows from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 28 at Bookmans Mesa. Every day four-legged family members are welcome in our stores. We enjoy spoiling them as much as we can, but Beach Blanket Bow-wows is designed to wow your pets.

Bringing the heritage of Southern 1990s hip-hop to Tucson, Big K.R.I.T. plays the Rialto at 8 p.m. this Friday, August 3 and one of you Bookmans Ticket Tuesday fans will receive passes for two.
Bookmans congratulates Dr. Diabolic and Nurse Narcotica on the arrival of Baby Diabolic. In celebration of that and the arrival of a bar at the next variety show we are giving away two pairs of tickets to see Dr. Diabolic's Traveling Roadshow and Fun-Time Variety Hour on Friday, August 3 at the Phoenix Art Museum.

To this day, they are the two greatest gifts Yvette has ever had the privilege of receiving. Her pit bull Pancho Villa and chow mix Blazzer are overly-spoiled canine children whose well-being and happiness are a top priority. Yvette couldn't imagine it any other way.
