Dr. Alexandra Birch is a violinist and scholar of the Holocaust in the USSR. Learn about new research on the Holocaust and the untold story of music from the “Holocaust by Bullets” in Eastern Europe in an interactive talk and recital. Dr. Birch will play examples and present rediscovered works of classical music from the Holocaust and sign her latest two CDs following the presentation.
Dr. Alexandra Birch has a diverse career as a violinist, violist, and scholar. As a soloist and chamber musician, Miss Birch has toured extensively in the USA, Asia, Russia, and Europe in over 20 countries including performances in Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Bolshoi Theatre, and the Mariinski Theater. She is also a prizewinner in numerous national and international competitions including AFAF Romantic Music competition, International Brahms Competition, American Protégé Competition, IBLA competition, Moscow Conservatory Concerto competition, and Four Seasons Orchestra Mozart, Bach, and Spanish competitions. Dr. Birch holds a Bachelors (BM – Summa Cum Laude), Masters (MM), and Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) from Arizona State University where she was a student of Dr. Katherine McLin.
Equal in academics and performance, Dr. Birch’s research focuses on music and the arts under duress particularly from the former USSR. Currently, she is working with undiscovered scores from the Holocaust in the former USSR and a lecture-recital tour and CD with pianists Dani Shraibman and Yeojin Seol. This is part of a larger research initiative examining the “deghettoization” of Holocaust music and its recognition in the broader classical canon. Dr. Birch is also working on monograph projects investigating the use of music in war and genocide by the Third Reich and separately Tashkent as a microcosm of Soviet Trauma.
Dr. Birch enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter, running, her cat “Kiska”, reading, and cooking.
