About Gabriel’s Angels

Gabriel’s Angels is the only program in Arizona that inspires confidence, compassion and best behaviors in at-risk children through pet therapy. Gabriel’s Angels was formed in 2000 out of a pressing and documented need in the community to intervene in the lives of at-risk children. Our short-term goal is to instill in children an overall emotional sense of well-being, safety, and happiness. Our long-term aspiration is to help children learn critical core social skills necessary for a brighter, productive future.

Currently, we provide pet therapy services to 122 partner agencies free of charge and serve over 14,800 children annually through 185 registered Pet Therapy Teams. Teams, consisting of a registered therapy dog and owner, visit crisis nurseries, domestic violence and homeless shelters, group homes, and at-risk children in after school programs and self-contained classrooms. Our efforts are to enhance their emotional and behavioral development by teaching core behaviors such as trust, empathy, and respect.

About Urban Poetry Pollinators

urbanpoetrypollinators's profile picture

Urban Poetry Pollinators are a Tucson-based volunteer poetry group dedicated to cultivating poetry in public spaces. The goal of UPP is to inspire neighborhoods and individuals to pollinate poetry in public spaces with the hope of sparking joy, dialogue, and human connection. Poetry pollination ideas are endless…Choose a poem along with a loaf of bread at your local baker, chalk a poem at a crosswalk or in front of a public library, tape a poem to a barber chair, pull a poem from a Poetry Mailbox, hand a poem to your local crossing guard! Stimulate your own ideas.

About Writing the Community

Writing the Community is a school-based creative writing residency program for K-12 students with the goals of developing creative and critical thinking skills, promoting a love of reading and writing, and helping students find their voice. In the Fall and Spring of each year, the University of Arizona Poetry Center places professional writers in local K-12 classrooms to lead six-to-eight-week long creative writing workshops. Programs are available both during regular class time and out-of-school time. Schools can select programs in the genres of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. At the end of the residency, students read a selection of their work at a celebratory reading and have one of their poems or stories published in our annual city-wide anthology.  They will have a few students at Bookmans to read poems they created.
