Our cultural admiration of superheroes in fiction such as comic books, anime, movies and cartoons is immense. Yet, real life social justice “superheroes” are often looked upon societally in disdain. Join us for a conversation titled “Soul Food & Superheroes” on re-framing representation of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color in comics and superhero pop culture as aspects of social justice.
Soul Food & Superheroes is an art show created by Therosia, an Arizona based visual and vocal artist. The show centers on honoring the superhuman service of social justice servants of the past and present by reimaging them as the superheroes that they are. The concurrent message of the shoe is that People of Color have done double, and in some cases, triple the work for centuries. There is a season of rest that is needed for healing. The closing reception will conclude the month long showing and will feature a live painting performance by Therosia.
Join us for an evening of FREE kids mask making and free comics. Stop by the Bookmans table and grab some swag at the beautiful Mesa Artspace Lofts in Downtown Mesa.
