This week, we’re joined by Colin Katchmar.Lopate calls it the double perspective. Silverman calls it the voices of innocence and experience. Whatever we might call it there is no doubting the power of retrospection in Creative Nonfiction as a necessary tool to mediate multiple senses of identity within the I narrator. Together we will look at examples of writers who use the double perspective to great effect and discuss its implications. Generative prompts will help us consider how tense, voice and narrative distance can be leveraged to create an authorial vantage point that makes retrospection more effective.
Colin Katchmar is a multi-genre writer specializing in creative nonfiction. His essays have appeared in “The Awakenings Review” and “Pyre Magazine”. Colin received his MAW at Coastal Carolina University and is a second year MFA candidate at Northern Arizona University. You can find him on Twitter @KatchmarColin
