Geek Games 2015 Recap
While our Mesa and Phoenix brethren attended Phoenix Comicon in all its geeky glory, we up north put on a geek culture celebration of our own — Geek Games 2015. The first annual Geek Games took place with all the tournaments, activities and competitions we could squeeze into 72 hours. Partnering with fellow nerds and local Flag businesses like Cab Comics and The Geekery, Bookmans Flag hosted a slew of events reaching unheard of geeking out levels.
Things kicked off with the YuGiOh tournament at Cab Comics. Competitors battled friend and foe in an effort to achieve victory and receive the coveted gift certs and geek-tastic paraphernalia that was 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. But that’s not all that took place Saturday. Bookmans Flag hosted a MarioKart N64 tournament. Turtle shells were thrown and contestants were pitched off the ice by rogue penguins in the epic battle of speed. A Magic the Gathering event was thrown by the one and only Geekery. With so many options for maximum geekdom it’s a wonder the geek population wasn’t too exhausted to attend events for the following day.
Oh, but they did. They so totally did. The second array of Geek Games awesomeness continued with another video game tournament at our place. This time the name of the game was Super Smash Bros Melee and as expected this cult classic Nintendo gem drew crowds as retro gaming enthusiasts flocked to Bookmans Flag. Once again prizes went to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the form of gift cards from Cab Comics and Bookmans, a sweet and stylish backpack sporting the Bookmans slogan, “Geeking out if half the fun,” a matching water bottle and coveted graphic novels like Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns.
The fun continued with a table top event in the Bookmans Cafe as well as free caricature and superhero drawings by Arizona’s own Russ Kazmierczak. Local comic book author and illustrator, you can find Russ’s stuff at Karaokefanboypress.blogspot.com. Including a weekly podcast! Geek Games ended with a special addition of Game Night at The Weatherford. Patrons could sit, relax and enjoy a frothy beverage while completely dominating at Settlers of Catan.
We couldn’t be more thankful to everyone who came out for Geek Games 2015. We hope this to be the first of many in the years to come and could not have made this nerdy little dream into a full blown reality with out the help of Cab Comics, The Geekery, Firecreek Coffee Company and The Hotel Weatherford.
Bookmans celebrates Geek Culture all year long but we are especially vocal during the month of May. Check out some of the things we have planned on our events page and look for us at Phoenix Comicon May 28-31. But before you hit up PCC, read our complete guide to con survival.
