Counting Days the Gregorian Calendar Way
One most people accept a calendar as part of their life without consideration. Such has it been for busy folks for several thousand years. Calendar systems were developed by civilizations all over the world and with different accounting methods. The history of time keeping is the history of mankind, you included. It’s likely that you either received a calendar for the holidays or will buy one soon. Chances are you’ll pick up a Gregorian calendar. Read on to find out why.
The ancient Mayan calendar had two separate years, the 260-day Sacred Round and the 365 day Vague year. We don’t know about you, but that sounds interesting to us … a ‘vague’ year. The Athenians have a 364 day lunisolar calendar. Where did the other day go? The Romans got really complicated and counted years from the founding of Rome or sometimes from the reign of the current consul. They had an 8-day week and used two different year lengths. The older one had 304 days divided into 10 months and the newer 365 days in 12 months. The solar based Hindu calendar has 360 days, while the Islamic calendar is based on the moon. The oldest known calendar is the Lunar Calendar found in Aberdeenshire, Scotland which was constructed around 8000 BCE. The most widely used civil calendar is the Gregorian calendar, named for Pope Gregory XII who introduced it in 1582. The Gregorian calendar is a refinement from the Julian calendar and is the one we use in the U.S.
