National LGBTQ Pride Month is observed across the country each June. But here at Bookmans, we like to keep the celebration of diversity going all year round. What better way to reflect on acceptance and diversity than to read incredible books? Today, we highlight Kate Bornstein’s Gender Outlaw, a multi-genre biography about a multi-genre life. This book is about humanity, journeys and choices. The pages are filled with gumption and wisdom. It is written in a relatable way that encourages readers to reflect on their own individual experiences with misunderstanding and adversity. Bornstein sets an example of how readers can speak and live their own truths. She has dedicated herself to redefining ‘identity’ and is an inspiration for living life in an understanding and creative way.

Kate Bornstein was born March 15, 1948 and assigned the gender of male at birth. In 1986, she had gender reassignment surgery and now identifies as non-gender conforming. She writes, “Instead of saying that all gender is this or all gender is that, let’s recognize that the word gender has scores of meaning built into it. It’s an amalgamation of bodies, identities, and life experiences, subconscious urges, sensations, and behaviors, some of which develop organically, and others which are shaped by language and culture. Instead of saying that gender is any one single thing, let’s start describing it as a holistic experience.”

I first purchased Bornstein’s book at Bookmans East in 2003 and have traded/repurchased it several times over the years. Every time I open this book, I find something new. I hope you check it out for yourself! Be sure to stop by your local Bookmans. Our friendly staff members are always happy to help you find something awesome – like Gender Outlaw.
