Just when we thought vittles couldn’t get any spikier, the Chocolate Covered Scorpions at the Arizona State Fair proved us wrong. These unconventional critters may not taste as good as they sound. According to the Phoenix New Times, “the scorpion’s bitter taste–somewhere between poison and gasoline–is gag-worthy.” Enjoy at your own risk.

Rattlesnake at Rustler’s Rooste
Nestled in the foothills of South Mountain, Rustler’s Rooste knows how to create a memorable dining experience. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by both a breathtaking view and a friendly live steer. What do slow, cold brewed coffee beans, sumptuous Mexican chocolate, and Sonoran native Chiltepín chiles have in common? They come together to create an out-of-this-world Chiltepín Toddy at Exo Coffee in Downtown Tucson. The Chiltepín is thought to be the original species from which all other hot peppers descended. This iced coffee concoction is thought to be mind-blowingly amazing.

Ponderosa Vanilla Latte at Firecreek Coffee
North of the Sonoran Desert among the San Francisco Peaks, resides a local coffee house overflowing with goodness. Firecreek puts their pine trees where their coffee is with the Ponderosa Vanilla Latte. In house, hand-crafted syrups include the aforementioned Ponderosa Pine, Salted Cardamom and Orange Lavender. Oh my.

Cactus Fries at Cowboy Club
Cacti aren’t just to be avoided on scenic hikes but to be, believe it or not, enjoyed as haute cuisine. Case in point, Cactus Fries at Cowboy Club. These flash fried, crispy cactus strips are served with prickly pear dipping sauce and plenty of Arizona pop culture history. Originally called The Oak Creek Tavern and located in the historic center of Sedona, this joint has seen the likes of John Wayne, Burt Lancaster, Burl Ives, James Stewart and Gene Autry. The aptly re-named Cowboy Club pairs high desert gourmet grub with old west charm.

Throw in Day of the Dead-inspired face painting and our ultimate Southwest fantasy is complete.
