Bookmans Recommends | Kesha’s Rainbow
When I first listened to the song Rainbow from Kesha’s new album of the same name, I was stopped at a red light trying not to shed any tears. Let’s just say that I wasn’t able to hold any back. It’s been five years since Kesha has released an album and she claims that this one saved her life. According to Rolling Stone Magazine, “Rainbow is a cathartic album for Kesha…making the record helped her cope with depression. ‘I would roll out of bed, get in my car and show up to the studio,’ Kesha said. ‘And I would just keep making songs. That was my way to cope.'” Rainbow features appearances by the Dap-Kings Horns, Eagles of Death Metal and the one and only Dolly Parton. This album is different from anything that Kesha has ever done. Her single, Praying is already attracting attention as a powerful study in healing and redemption. Kesha’s Rainbow feels like the album that set her free.
Top Tracks
Track 5: Praying
For this track, Kesha worked with Ryan Lewis. Upon first listen, it’s easy to hear his influential sound. This is a side of her we haven’t yet seen, but the ambience is so critical. This track almost feels like you can feel her and hear her healing process through everything she has worked so hard to overcome.
Track 8: Rainbow
This track is a song that Kesha actually wrote while in rehab. In an interview about her new album, she talks about how she continuously had to convince the manager of the rehab to let her have an hour with a keyboard a day. I’m glad that she won that one.
Track 12: Old Flames (Can’t Hold a Candle to You)
The lady, the myth, the legend, Dolly Parton joins Kesha on this cover of a Parton classic. Old Flames (Can’t Hold a Candle to You) was actually co-written by Kesha’s mother, Pebe Sebert and it was a number one hit for Parton on her 1980 album, Dolly, Dolly, Dolly.
