A Spanish Armada sailor’s quest for survival turns into an epic battle for love, freedom, and justice in this gripping reimagined legend of the Tudor era.
The coast of Ireland, 1588: Aboard a lone galleon, part of what once was the mighty Armada, Inyo Fernández has barely survived harrowing weeks of starvation and sea battles, when his ship is far off course, heading straight into a catastrophic storm.
In Ireland, the O’Malley chieftain’s granddaughter, Finley, has only recently discovered how badly her world is broken. And now, she and the entire clan are about to be plunged into a desperate struggle against foreign domination. So much is already at stake, and hiding an enemy of the Crown will endanger everyone’s lives even more. Finley, however, is inexplicably drawn to the stranger.
Amid uncertain days, a spark ignites between Finley and Inyo but when Finley’s kin are ambushed, Inyo and Finley unexpectedly find themselves catapulted into untold dangers across the sea.
About the Author:
Like Inyo, the protagonist of her story, Nicole N. H. Schwabacher was once aboard a ship in the Celtic Sea in a hurricane. Despite this surreal and terrifying experience, the sea still has a hold on her heart and recently she sailed and worked aboard the San Salvador, a replica of a 16th century Spanish galleon. She leads a nomadic life that has taken her across Asia, Europe and North America, working as an educator at various schools, organizations, and museums, and as a hiking guide in the American West. Her favorite pastimes include exploring new cultures, hiking, travel, and learning about archaeology, science, and history. She is looking forward to visiting more of Grace O’Malley’s territory. She lives in northern Arizona with her family and three tabby cats. Inyo’s Ring is her first novel.

This week, we’re joined by Colin Katchmar.Lopate calls it the double perspective. Silverman calls it the voices of innocence and experience. Whatever we might call it there is no doubting the power of retrospection in Creative Nonfiction as a necessary tool to mediate multiple senses of identity within the I narrator. Together we will look at examples of writers who use the double perspective to great effect and discuss its implications. Generative prompts will help us consider how tense, voice and narrative distance can be leveraged to create an authorial vantage point that makes retrospection more effective.
Colin Katchmar is a multi-genre writer specializing in creative nonfiction. His essays have appeared in “The Awakenings Review” and “Pyre Magazine”. Colin received his MAW at Coastal Carolina University and is a second year MFA candidate at Northern Arizona University. You can find him on Twitter @KatchmarColin

This week, we’re joined by Reece Gritzmacher.
We will play with flash nonfiction—exploring the power of condensing imagery, thought, and action into 750 or fewer words to make them ever more vivid. Every word, every space, every punctuation mark counts. How do you want to use yours? We will read a couple sample essays, then engage in writing exercises.
Reece Gritzmacher grew up in Portland, Oregon. Their poetry and prose have been published on Poets.org, Sundog Lit, Another Chicago Magazine, tiny wren lit, Bending Genres, So to Speak, and elsewhere. They hold an MFA from Northern Arizona University.

Join us in the cafe at 5 PM for a reading of Mary Tolan’s debut novel, Mars Hill Murder
Longtime reporter Mary Tolan worked as a community journalist for more than three decades, mostly in Arizona and New Mexico. She also reported on survivors of gun violence, traveling across the country to interview people devastated by their heartbreak and losses. She taught journalism at Northern Arizona University for twenty years. After retiring from teaching in 2021, she returned to her unfinished mystery novel, Mars Hill Murder, based in Flagstaff. Tolan grew up in Wisconsin, and has lived in the Southwest for more than forty years. Her long-running monthly column The Long & Winding Road can be found in The Arizona Daily Sun. When she’s not writing, spending time with friends, or running/swimming/yoga-ing, she and her dog Maxx can be found out in the woods or traveling in their van. Tolan’s sons live in California, her stepdaughter in Oregon, and her dog by her side—wondering when the heck she will stop typing and go for a walk.
MARS HILL MURDER
BY
MARY TOLAN
Reporter Miles Harper is on probation at the northern Arizona daily newspaper where he works, because his lack of attention to detail has put him on ice as thin as his notebook pages. His boss wants him out, but gives him one more chance to redeem himself. Maddy Sullivan is new to town, on the run from a violent husband who wants her back. She and Miles meet at a coffee shop, and forge a hesitant friendship. Police Detective Luis Ortega, Miles’s former college roommate, just wants to solve crimes. And an evil person or persons supplying those crimes by murdering low-level Flagstaff workers. Will these three figure out who the killer is before more people die? Will Miles help solve the mystery, write about it, and save his career? And will Maddy stay safe from the horrid man she once loved?
