Veg Out AZ: Snack and Shop Across the State
Are you Veg curious? The rising popularity of vegan and vegetarian cuisine has paved the way for sans-meat options all over Arizona. One particular staple makes the vegetarian lifestyle a breeze. I’m talking about the all-American veggie burger. Whether it’s traditional, topped with mushrooms, laced with green chile or stacked like a double-decker tourist bus, the veggie burger is an art. To celebrate this tasty vegetarian snack, I’ve compiled a top five list (in no particular order) that both herbivores and omnivores can enjoy. Luckily, each of the top five are moments away from a Bookmans. This summer, get on the road and explore one or all of these local gastronomic gems. Then, stop in at Bookmans to peruse our awesome vegan and vegetarian cooking section for some rad finds.
The Magic Mushroom Burger at Spoke and Wheel
Closest Bookmans: Phoenix
Indulge with roasted portobello mushrooms, goat cheese, caramelized onions, sun dried tomatoes, capers and spinach. A truly magical experience.
The Big Wac at Green New American Vegetarian Tempe
Closest Bookmans: Mesa
Finally! A much healthier cure for the Big Mac jones. Two hand-packed vegan burgers, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun. Add thyme fries for a veg-stravaganza.
The Netzky Veggie Burger at Diablo Burger Flagstaff and Tucson
Closest Bookmans: Flagstaff
In Tucson: Grant and Bookmans Sports
Locally sourced and produced, this “burger” is made with farm-fresh eggs, heirloom veggies and served with DB frites. Vegetarians rejoice!
The Big Hippie at The Parish

Oh sweet roasted eggplant croquette! This twist on the average veggie burger is decadent, just as comfort food should be. Topped with fresh tomato, red onion, lettuce and pomegranate ketchup, it’s sure to hush your mouth.
Clint’s “Almost Famous” Veggie Burger at Zinburger
Closest Bookmans: Speedway
Done as only Zinburger can — smoked mozzarella, avocado, pea shoots, ripe tomato and house-made mayo, need I say more?
One of the best parts of trying out vegetarian meals is discovering something new and delightful. Take a cue from these amazing local restaurants and apply that inspiration to home-cooked fare. We’ll keep the cookbooks stocked. Bon appétit!
