Geeking Out with Electra Woman, Dyna Girl and the World of Sid and Marty Krofft
By Todd W., Vintage Star Wars Toys Guy for Bookmans Mesa
Hollywood, oh, Hollywood. You did it again. With all of the hype and anticipation surrounding the new Electra Woman and Dyna Girl movie coming out June 7 and starring Grace Helbig and Hannah Hart, I am compelled to revisit the original series of the same name.
Debuting in 1976 and originally part of Saturday Morning’s Sid and Marty Krofft’s Krofft Supershow, Electra Woman And Dyna Girl embattled their way to an impressive cult status. The concept is simple. To all the world, Lori and Judy are star reporters for the prestigious NewsMaker magazine, but secretly they are Electra Woman and Dyna Girl! These “High Voltage Vixens” solve crimes that no law enforcement agency can handle. This dynamic duo does it all with their wrist-mounted Electra-Comms, energized by the electronic genius Frank Hefflin’s Crimescope. A panache of cute quips and clever comebacks tops off their superhero presence! The show’s theme is sung by a young Marie Osmond, the costumes are flamboyant while the story lines thin. The acting we’ll call “campy”. This is the epitome of ’70s Saturday morning television at its best.
The cast consists of Deidre Hall, of Days Of Our Lives fame, playing Electra Woman, voice actress Judy Strangis, playing the sidekick Dyna Girl, and Norman Alden, who brings to life Frank Hefflin. Alden is best known to fans as the voice of Aquaman on Hanna Barbera’s Super Friends. Lasting only 8 episodes, this series introduced us to such villains as Glitter Rock, The Sorcerer, and the infamous Spider Lady. Merchandise for the show included Halloween costumes, lunch boxes, action figures and View-Master reels. To find this gem of a series on DVD proved to be harder than I thought. Having only 1-2 episodes released on VHS and one of those same episodes being released on a Krofft Collector’s DVD set, it left this fan wanting MORE!
Luckily the folks at Beyond Home Entertainment Australia heard my prayers and answered them. Last year, they released The World Of Sid And Marty Krofft’s Collector Set. This set is custom made for any Krofft fan, featuring COMPLETE SERIES for Krofft favorites, H.R. Pufnstuf, Land of the Lost, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters and Electra Woman. Although this set is from Australia, it is NTSC and Region Free, which means it will play in your DVD player! At this time, there are no plans to release the set in the U.S., which makes this set such a collectors item. This IS the one you want!
Fire up those Electra Beams, this is ELECTRA-Fantastic!
