Lust For Life, Iggy Pop
A wise man once said, “I’m worth a million in prizes.” That’s right, we’re talking about Iggy Pop. Celebrate your punk-rock side with this self affirming 1980s anthem. Lust for Life offers great motivation to jump around uncontrollably and discover that joie de vivre that makes you feel like a million bucks.
Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, Diana Ross or Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell
We can’t decide which version of this song we love more, so we’re going for both. Diana Ross builds magical drama with her spoken-word intro leading to a majestic chorus. Marvin & Tammi’s charismatic chemistry is unmatched on their version. Written by legendary duo, Ashford & Simpson, this tune just gets better every time one listens – or sings along.
I Won’t Back Down, Tom Petty
As the story goes, Tom Petty’s house was set on fire in 1987 when an unknown assailant threw a can of lighter fluid against his home. When nearly everything he owned was destroyed, Tom built an even larger house on the same property in order to send a message that he, you know, wouldn’t back down. In the face of adversity, Tom Petty not only stood strong, but wrote one of the greatest American rock songs of all time. A great metaphor to live by and an awesome song to turn to eleven.
Independent Women Pt. 1, Destiny’s Child
C’mon, you know you want to party like it’s the year 2000. Just try to resist singing along to this girl-power tune whilst posing like one of Charlie’s Angels. Recorded for the film adaptation of the classic 1970s television series, Independent Women Pt. 1 kicked off the new millennium in feminista style. Go on ahead, throw your hands up and get down like that.
I Believe in You, Sarah Vaughan
Written in 1961 by Frank Loesser for the musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, this snappy tune was made famous by Robert Morse. The protagonist of the musical, J. Pierrepont Finch, sings the song to himself in the mirror before a big meeting. Sarah Vaughan adds soul and jazzes this number up for her album, The Explosive Side of Sarah Vaughan.
Grab a hairbrush, a Guitar Hero axe, a real microphone or a prop of your choice. It’s time to look yourself in the face and declare your merits in song. Bookmans will be here to back you up with music, instruments, and a friendly third place. Here’s to feeling great all year!
