October is National Adopt A Shelter Dog Month. Did you know that approximately 6.5 million animals enter U.S. animal shelters every year? Did you also know that Arizona has the highest rate of euthanasia in the entire country? Bookmans encourage you to adopt instead of shop for your next family member. Here are some tips to find your dog in Arizona.
Here are a few tips on how to approach adopting a shelter pet if it is your first time.
1.) Do your research and visit your local shelter or rescue group. #AdoptDontShop
2.) Be prepared financially. Will you be able to afford the long-term care for your dog?
3. ) Are you allowed to have pets where you’re living now? Any restrictions on size or breed?
Now, where will you go to meet your new companion? Arizona has many agencies who have available dogs in need.
We are incredibly lucky to have partners in the Arizona Animal Welfare League, Arizona Adopt A Greyhound, and Amazing Aussies. The Arizona Humane Society has an abundance of resources on their website. That includes alternatives to surrendering your pet to dog training tips and training classes. Due to overcrowding, most animal shelters in the Valley will have reduced adoption prices to help find the animals their forever homes.
Bookmans is a long-time supporter of The Humane Society of Southern Arizona. The HSSA offers low-cost spay and neuter services to help curb the problem of pet overpopulation. You can join the Coconino Humane Association the 2nd Saturday of every month at Bookmans Flag. They’re available to share info about their adoptable dogs. They’re not just a shelter either. They also provide a senior adoption program, emergency response, disease prevention, seek to educate about animal welfare, and more.
