The Haunting Of Ed and Lorraine Warren
We love a good scare or haunting on Halloween. Some scientists believe that it’s a natural craving humans have to whet our brains’ appetites for fight or flight responses. Whether it is those bloodcurdling screams heard echoing in the night or the moaning of a bodyless spirit, we can’t get enough of the horror. We stay calm, knowing at the end of the day everything will be alright.
But what if you couldn’t escape the evil? What if this was your everyday job?
Enter demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. Edward was initially a World War II Navy veteran and a former police officer. He would become a self-taught and self-professed demonologist, author, and public speaker. Lorraine claimed to be both clairvoyant and a medium. Together, the couple founded the New England Society for Psychic Research in 1952. They were one of the very first paranormal investigators involved with the notorious Amityville haunting.
The Warren’s battle with the paranormal has been interpreted in many films like The Conjuring, Annabelle, The Haunting In Connecticut. The couple wrote books chronicling their supernatural adventures, their lives, and livelihood tied into hauntings. Personally, I recommend The Demonologist. It details some of Ed and Lorraine’s early investigations as well as the horror and the halls of their Amityville haunting experience.
Ed Warren left this world on August 23, 2006. Lorraine retired after his death, but she did remain a consultant to the N.E.S.P.R. According to the Warrens’ official website, “she will be passing on the ‘torch’ to her son-in-law, Tony Spera, who has worked with both Ed and Lorraine Warren for over thirty years.” Lorraine would reunite with Ed on April 20th, 2019.
Those in the paranormal field and skeptics criticize Ed and Lorraine’s claims. Many believe the couple to be good good at telling campfire ghost stories but lacking any real evidence of their gifts. Whether the stories are hoaxes or accurate, it’s clear that these two investigators made their mark on the paranormal world. Their legacy will forever live on.
