Meet Miss Jenna of Read to Me Story Time at Bookmans Flagstaff
Bookmans Flagstaff’s Read To Me Story Time has a new face as we welcome Miss Jenna to the Bookmans family. Story time at Bookmans Flagstaff has always been fun. We enjoy sharing our favorite children’s stories with you and your families. But when Jenna Dickerson approached us with interest in volunteering for story time, we knew she would be a great addition to the team and a valued asset to Read to Me Story Time. Everyone fell in love with Miss Jenna as we launched our new literacy-based story time, complete with songs, a letter of the day and story books for the whole family to enjoy. Get to know Miss Jenna and her plans for Read to Me Story Time with our quick Q&A.
How did you get your start doing story times?
I began doing literacy-based story times for the library district in Denver. They hired me because I had been a literacy specialist in the public school system in Colorado. The library supported literacy and wanted to provide early literacy programs that were fun for families. What could be more fun than story time? Add the literacy piece, and you have a wonderful opportunity for fun and learning the same time.
What is your favorite part about story time?
My favorite part is that story time is still a time where learning is fun and playful and we can all be a little silly. Learning at this age is still so magical. I love to hear them say, “Hey that’s a K! And my name is Katie!” It’s an honor to be a part of their learning process.
What does it mean to do a “literacy-based story time”?
A literacy-based story time is a story time that focuses on pre-reading skills that prepare a child to get ready to read. Story time introduces pre-reading skills such singing, playing and talking by having fun with letters, numbers and colors. Through play a child develops a love for books and is motivated to read and write through enjoying story time with their family.
Thank you Miss Jenna for volunteering your time every week for Read to Me Story Time. The entire Bookmans team is thrilled to have you here and look forward to working with you. Read To Me Story Time meets at 9:30a.m. every Friday in Bookmans Kids Corner. Join us for fun and learning with Miss Jenna.
