Bookmans Recommends: Warriors by Erin Hunter
One of the most popular young adult series is going strong and expanding. The Warriors series by Erin Hunter is available in several formats. This multi-tiered series follows the adventures of four clans of wild cats, ThunderClan, ShadowClan WindClan and RiverClan, in their forest and lake homes. SkyClan, the forgotten fifth clan, is later introduced in the series. There are currently six sub-series, each containing six books. The titles can be enjoyed independently but we recommend that you read from the beginning, starting with the first novel Warriors.
This series begins with Into the Wild, continues in Fire and Ice, Forest of Secrets, Rising Storm, A Dangerous Path and finally The Darkest Hour. This initial story is subtitled The Prophecies Begin and opens with the experiences of a pet cat or “kittypet” named Rusty who ventures into the forest and is invited to join ThunderClan.
ThunderClan is one of the four clans of wild cats surviving in the forest. Once Rusty accepts the invitation to join the clan he is given an apprenticeship and renamed Firepaw. No spoilers allowed, so we can only say that much intrigue follows while Rusty/Firepaw learns the warrior ways and the history and hierarchy of the clans.
There is little worry of running out of books to read too soon. The first series is followed by many more. The second series is Warriors: The New Prophecy, followed by Warriors: Power of Three, Warriors: Omen of the Stars, Dawn of the Clans, and A vision of Shadows. The adventures don’t stop there.
Multiple stories arc from the main lines and include hardcover, paperback and graphic novel versions. The graphic novels follow the clans but have their own story lines. The Warriors series also includes super editions, which are stand alone novels that cover an individual story line in more detail.
Hunter’s novels are many and the tales do not stop at cat clans. Also included are the story lines of dogs and bears. Die hard fans can play Warrior games online and enjoy first hand a land where cats rule the world. This complex and compelling multi-tiered series has so many characters, adventures and story lines that they appeal to a range of ages and tastes.
